‘Amul’ loses trademark battle for ‘Trix’

Nov 17, 2012: In one of the landmark judgments related to trademark, Amul has lost the trademark battle for its brand ‘TRIX’. The Intellectual Property Appellate Board has asked the registration of TRIX brand to be cancelled and has directed the Registrar of Trademarks to execute the same. Amul lost the Trix brand to US food giant General Mills India Pvt. Ltd. which claimed of holding the Trix trademark since 1910 and infringing on its trademark. GCMMFL had registered the trademark in 1977 and launched its first chocolate under Trix trademark in 1986.
