Chennai: Marking World Kidney Day, NephroPlus, Asia’s largest dialysis care network, has launched a nationwide organ donation pledge campaign in collaboration with the MOHAN Foundation to raise awareness about the life-saving impact of organ donation and encourage individuals to formally pledge their organs.
As a dialysis care provider supporting thousands of patients living with kidney failure, NephroPlus witnesses first-hand immediacy for kidney transplants, and the challenges patients face while waiting for a suitable donor. Through this initiative, the organisation aims to amplify the conversation around organ donation and encourage more individuals to step forward and pledge their organs.
The campaign aims to mobilise 10,000+ organ donation pledges, marking the beginning of a broader effort to inspire a social movement around organ donation in India. Each pledge has the potential to save or significantly improve multiple lives by making vital organs available for patients in need of transplants.
India continues to face a severe gap between the demand for organs and their availability. More than 82,000 patients are currently waiting for organ transplants across the country, including over 60,000 people awaiting kidney transplants. Meanwhile, the need for kidney transplants alone is estimated at 1.75–2 lakh annually, yet only around 13,000 transplants are performed each year, highlighting the urgent need for greater organ donation awareness.
Kamal Shah, Co-Founder, NephroPlus, “Every day we see patients battling kidney failure while waiting for a transplant that could transform their lives. Organ donation has the power to offer hope to thousands of families. Through this campaign, we want to encourage individuals to take a simple but powerful step—pledging their organs and becoming part of a movement that can save lives.”
Dr. Bhanu Chandra, Manager – Operations and Senior Transplant Coordinator , MOHAN Foundation said, “Awareness and timely pledging play a crucial role in improving organ donation rates in India. Partnerships like this help bring the conversation about organ donation to more communities and encourage people to make informed decisions that can help save lives.”
Dr. Ratan Jha, Clinical Director, Department of Nephrology, CARE Hospital also shared how kidney donation can bring a major difference in a patient suffering from end stage renal disease.
Through this initiative, NephroPlus aims to make organ donation pledges easier and more accessible for individuals across India. A dedicated campaign landing page hosted on the NephroPlus website will guide individuals to register their pledge through the MOHAN Foundation’s official organ donation platform.
To extend the campaign’s reach beyond digital channels, NephroPlus centres across India will facilitate awareness and pledge participation on ground. Informational brochures and QR codes will be placed at dialysis centres to help patients, caregivers, and visitors easily access the pledge platform and learn more about organ donation.
The campaign will also be supported by a series of awareness initiatives and digital outreach activities, aimed at educating communities about the importance of organ donation and addressing common myths and misconceptions.
By bringing together patients, healthcare providers, and the wider community, NephroPlus hopes the pledge initiative will act as a catalyst for increased organ donation awareness and contribute to bridging the gap between the demand and availability of life-saving organs in India.
