Twitter creates official hashtags for football world cup, will provide real time updates

Twitter has now created the official hashtags for football world cup so as to provide real-time updates of all the 64 matches to be held in Brazil this year. Football fans can follow the updates on #WorldCup and #Brazil2014. Micro Blogging Site Twitter is looking to cash in on the amazing presence of players on Twitter who are participating in the game. More than 300 players from 32 competing nations are on Twitter.

Twitter has also come out with a new feature called XI dream team. The dream team would consist of most mentioned players on Twitter @handles in the past three months. According to a recent study by Nielsen, 1.7 million tweets about the football World Cup are made in two hours and that about 492 million Tweets sent in 2013 were about a sports event. Twitter has now become the second choice after the TV breakfast and according to Global Web Index, more than half of the football lovers in India preferred Twitter as a medium to access news as the news breaks faster on Twitter. The research further shows that 87 per cent of the Twitter users in India will be watching World Cup this time.
