Ankura Hospital Celebrates Young Cancer Survivors on World Cancer Day

Ankura Hospital for Women and Children, Hyderabad  marked World Cancer Day by hosting a special celebration for children who have battled cancer, bringing together survivors, parents and doctors in a day filled with smiles, encouragement and shared strength.

The event was organised by the hospital’s Oncology and Haematology department to honour the courage of young cancer warriors and to remind families that recovery is possible with timely care and strong emotional support.

According to global health estimates, nearly 4 lakh children are diagnosed with cancer every year worldwide. Doctors say that with early detection and modern treatment, survival rates in childhood cancers have improved significantly over the years.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Srikanth Marda, Consultant Pediatric Oncologist and Hematologist, said, “Cancer in children is challenging, but many childhood cancers are treatable if diagnosed early. Awareness among parents is extremely important. Symptoms like persistent fever, unusual swelling, unexplained bruising, weight loss or continuous fatigue should never be ignored.”

The celebration included magic shows, stand-up comedy performances, games and a cake-cutting ceremony. Gifts were distributed to the children, turning the day into a joyful break from hospital memories and a celebration of their resilience.

The hospital also emphasised the importance of mental health in recovery. Dr. Sneha Kulkarni, Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, addressed parents on the emotional impact of long-term illness.

“When a child undergoes serious treatment, the emotional journey affects the entire family. Psychological care is not optional — it is a key part of healing. A positive environment helps children cope better and rebuild confidence,” she said.

Parents shared their personal experiences, expressing gratitude for the support they received during treatment. Many described the gathering as a moment of hope and solidarity, allowing families to connect with others who understand their journey.

The initiative reflects Ankura Hospital’s ongoing commitment to holistic cancer care that focuses not only on medical treatment, but also on emotional well-being and long-term support for children and their families.
