Medical Marvel: Newborn Baby with Rare Skull Defect Gets New Lease of Life in Areekode Aster MIMS Mother Hospital

Condition reported in fewer than 500 cases globally; multi-disciplinary team at Aster MIMS Mother Hospital achieves a breakthrough milestone in rural healthcare delivery.

Areekode: In a rare medical feat, clinical specialists at the Aster MIMS Mother Hospital Areekode successfully performed a highly complex, life-saving reconstructive surgery on a three day old infant born with an extremely rare cranial defect. The newborn diagnosed with Aplasia Cutis Congenita, a congenital condition reported in fewer than 500 cases globally was successfully stabilised and discharged from the hospital on the tenth day after birth.

The infant was born with a critical 7×4 cm opening in the skull structure for a couple hailing from Mukkam. This defect left the dura mater, the thick outermost membrane protecting the brain, entirely exposed to the external environment. Specialist attended the delivery stated that even a minor injury or mild localised infection would have resulted in immediate, fatal complications.

Recognising the imminent threat to life, an emergency multi-disciplinary medical collective comprising the departments of Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Neonatology, and Anesthesiology was formed. The team successfully performed a sophisticated surgical intervention known as an ‘Early Left Temporal Rotational Scalp Flap Reconstruction’.

The initial phase of the procedure required the neurosurgery unit to meticulously isolate and safeguard the exposed dura mater without inducing any trauma or pressure on the sensitive underlying cerebral tissue. Following this, the plastic surgery team bridged the cranial defect by mobilising and reconstructing a cutaneous flap using the infant’s own scalp skin.

“Seamless inter-departmental coordination and rapid clinical execution provided the foundation for this life-saving mission. Preserving the integrity of the brain tissue while simultaneously performing a major flap reconstruction on a neonate required absolute precision,” stated Dr. M. Sheikh Mohammed Sameer Khan, Neurosurgeon and Dr. Jinto, Plastic Surgeon in a joint statement.

The surgical management of a newborn weighing barely 3 kilograms presented profound challenges for the anesthesiology team, given the infant’s underdeveloped physiological systems and fragile immune response. Dr. Sumayya Abdullah, Head of Neonatology, noted that calibrating the exact dosage of anaesthesia and maintaining intra-operative stability were critical bottlenecks managed successfully via advanced monitoring infrastructure.

The neonatal care was supported by a specialized team including neonatologist Dr. Mohammed Ajmal, alongside Chief of Anesthesiology Dr. Mohammed Shaheen and doctors Raneena, Sabla Rasheed .P and Athira Raju.

Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Nihmatullah, Assistant Chief of Medical Services, observed that bridging the rural-urban healthcare divide was a significant milestone. “Deploying high-end tertiary intensive care units and specialised surgical teams in a rural pocket like Areekode represents a major victory for regional healthcare infrastructure,” Dr. Nihmatullah said.

Addressing a press conference, Robin C.V, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Aster MIMS Mother Hospital Areekode, confirmed that the infant made a complete recovery and was discharged on the seventh post-operative day.

“During pediatric emergencies, transferring a fragile patient over long distances to major cities introduces extreme risks and delays. Providing advanced, time-bound medical interventions locally was the decisive factor that saved this child’s life. Our long-term vision is to democratize access to elite healthcare infrastructure for common citizens within their local topographies,” the COO added.
