Birla Opus Paints and The Heritage Project Elevate Urban Heritage at Worli Koliwada

Mumbai, 9th July 2026: Birla Opus Paints, part of the Aditya Birla Group’s Grasim Industries, has partnered with The Heritage Project (THP), an initiative seeded by the RPG Foundation, to restore and repaint over 100 homes and four community centres in Mumbai’s historic Worli Koliwada. Rooted in the brand philosophy of Duniya Ko Rang Do, the initiative reflects Birla Opus Paints’ commitment to building cultural relevance through purpose-led partnerships that celebrate India’s living heritage while creating meaningful community impact.

As part of the initiative, Birla Opus Paints has also unveiled a campaign film documenting the transformation of Worli Koliwada over the past two months. One of Mumbai’s oldest fishing settlements, Worli Koliwada is home to the city’s indigenous Koli community and remains an enduring symbol of Mumbai’s coastal heritage. Despite rapid urbanisation, the neighbourhood continues to preserve its distinctive traditions, architecture, and vibrant cultural identity.

The beautification initiative captures this transformation, bringing to life streets that have been refreshed with a colour palette inspired by the Koli way of life, from the vivid hues of hand-painted fishing boats and the deep blues of the Arabian Sea to the warm golds of traditional Koli jewellery and festive marigolds.

Through the voices of residents, the film highlights the emotional impact of the initiative, showcasing how colour has renewed community pride while preserving the character of one of Mumbai’s most iconic neighbourhoods.

The project forms part of The Heritage Project’s Worli Koliwada Transformation Project, which focuses on strengthening neighbourhood identity, conserving cultural heritage, and supporting the livelihoods of the Koli community. More than 1,200 litres of paint and associated materials were used during the restoration. Given the area’s coastal location and exposure to high humidity, salinity, and heavy monsoons, Birla Opus Paints deployed its high-performance exterior paint solutions designed to deliver long-lasting durability and colour retention in challenging environmental conditions.

“At Birla Opus Paints, our philosophy of ‘Duniya Ko Rang Do’ is about creating spaces that people feel deeply connected to, and our partnership with ‘The Heritage Project’ is a meaningful way of bringing our ethos of togetherness to life. We believe colour has the power to bring a renewed sense of pride and camaraderie into communities, and we are thrilled to contribute to an initiative that celebrates the heritage that makes Worli Koliwada truly unique.” said Inderpreet Singh, Head – Marketing, Birla Opus Paints.

“Worli Koliwada reflects a heritage that continues to evolve with its people. Our work here is about strengthening that identity through small interventions that honour the past while supporting how the neighbourhood lives today,” said Radha Goenka, Founder, The Heritage Project.

The partnership reflects a shared vision of preserving heritage beyond monuments by investing in the neighbourhoods, communities, and living traditions that define India’s cultural landscape. By combining thoughtful conservation with the transformative power of colour, Birla Opus Paints and The Heritage Project have not only revitalised a historic precinct but also created a model for purpose-led community engagement, bringing the spirit of Duniya Ko Rang Do to life in one of Mumbai’s most cherished cultural landmarks.
