VIT Bhopal University’s New Innovation Aims to Improve Early Detection and Long-Term Monitoring of Pulmonary Fibrosis

Collaborative innovation aims to strengthen early disease monitoring, clinical decision-making, and remote respiratory care

National, 18 July, 2026: Researchers at VIT Bhopal University and collaborating institutions have  developed an intelligent remote monitoring system designed to support the continuous assessment  of pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive and debilitating lung disease that often requires long-term  monitoring to track its progression and optimise treatment. The innovation has been granted an Indian  Utility Patent, marking a significant step in the University’s efforts to develop technology-led solutions  for pressing healthcare challenges.

Pulmonary fibrosis causes irreversible scarring of lung tissue, making breathing increasingly difficult  and significantly affecting patients’ quality of life. Monitoring the disease remains a challenge, as  clinicians often rely on periodic hospital visits and clinical assessments to evaluate disease  progression and treatment response.

To address this gap, researchers from VIT Bhopal, and collaborating institutions have developed the  “Apparatus for Dynamic Monitoring and Analysis in Pulmonary Fibrosis,” an intelligent system  designed to continuously acquire and analyse patient-related clinical data. The technology aims to  help healthcare professionals monitor disease progression in real time, support earlier clinical  intervention, optimise treatment strategies, and enable more personalised, data-driven management  of patients.

The innovation has been granted under Indian Patent No. 588547, based on Patent Application No.  202421039574, filed on 21 May 2024 and granted on 7 May 2026.

The patented technology was developed by Dr. Rajneesh Kumar Patel and Dr. Siddharth Singh  Chouhan from the School of Computer Science and Engineering, VIT Bhopal University, in  collaboration with Dr. Nancy Kumari, a former researcher at VIT Bhopal and currently at SRM University  Delhi-NCR, Dr. Krishna Kumar Pandey from NIT Agartala, Amit Patel and Sunil Kumar Gautam from  MANIT Bhopal.

Designed with future-ready healthcare ecosystems in mind, the system has potential applications  across continuous patient monitoring, clinical decision support, remote healthcare delivery,  telemedicine, treatment evaluation, respiratory disease research, and personalised pulmonary care.  By enabling longitudinal analysis of patient data, the technology seeks to support clinicians with  timely insights that can improve long-term disease management.

On the innovation, Ms. Kadhambari S. Viswanathan, Assistant Vice President, VIT Bhopal  University, said, “This patent is a strong validation of the interdisciplinary research culture we are  building at VIT Bhopal. Pulmonary fibrosis remains a difficult disease to track and manage, and by  giving clinicians a system that continuously monitors and analyses patient data, our researchers are  addressing a genuine gap in respiratory care. Kudos to the team of researchers who collaborated for  bringing this innovation to the fore.”

From the research team, Dr. Rajneesh Kumar Patel said, “Pulmonary fibrosis is a complex disease  that demands continuous monitoring to understand how a patient’s condition evolves over time. Our  objective was to develop an intelligent system that can assist clinicians by analysing patient data  dynamically, supporting timely interventions and more informed treatment decisions. We hope this  technology will contribute to the future of connected and personalised respiratory care.”

The patent adds to VIT Bhopal University’s growing portfolio of intellectual property and reinforces its  focus on translating academic research into impactful technologies with real-world applications.  Through sustained investments in research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the  University continues to develop solutions that bridge engineering and healthcare while contributing to  India’s vision of becoming a global hub for science, technology, and innovation.
