Passionate in Marketing – In Conversation With Mr. Agastya Sonani, Director Extraordinaire at Sonani Jewels

Q. What does luxury mean to today’s consumer, and how is Sonani Jewels evolving to meet these changing expectations?

Luxury today is no longer defined by a price tag alone—it is defined by the overall experience. Consumers want to feel a connection with a brand long before they step into a showroom, and they expect that relationship to continue well after they make a purchase. Every touchpoint, from digital discovery and personalised service to packaging and after-sales care, contributes to their perception of luxury.

At Sonani Jewels, we believe luxury is about creating memorable experiences while delivering exceptional craftsmanship. We are constantly investing in elevating the customer journey so that every interaction reflects the values of trust, innovation and timeless elegance. Today’s consumers are looking for authenticity, transparency and meaningful purchases, and that is exactly what we strive to offer.

Q. Sonani Jewels recently launched its Men’s Collection. What inspired this move, and why did you feel the time was right?

The inspiration came directly from our customers. We noticed that while men are often part of the jewellery-buying journey—as husbands, fathers, sons or partners—they rarely have the same breadth of choices available to them. Women’s collections have evolved tremendously over the years, but the men’s category has remained relatively underserved.

We also found that many of our female customers were looking for meaningful jewellery gifts for the men in their lives but struggled to find premium, contemporary designs. This presented a clear opportunity. Modern men are increasingly confident in expressing their personal style, and jewellery has become an important part of that expression. We felt it was the right time to introduce a collection that combines understated luxury with everyday versatility.

Q. Are we witnessing a cultural shift where fine jewellery is becoming an everyday style essential rather than an occasion-led purchase?

Absolutely. Jewellery today has evolved beyond weddings and festive occasions. Consumers are incorporating fine jewellery into their everyday wardrobes as a reflection of their personality, lifestyle and individuality.

The growing popularity of lighter, versatile designs means people no longer wait for a special occasion to invest in jewellery. Whether it’s a solitaire pendant, diamond studs or a sleek bracelet, fine jewellery has become an extension of one’s personal style. This shift has encouraged us to design collections that are elegant enough for daily wear while retaining the craftsmanship and luxury associated with fine jewellery.

Q. How do you see lab-grown diamonds reshaping the future of fine jewellery in India?

Lab-grown diamonds are redefining luxury by making exceptional quality more accessible. They offer consumers the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds while providing significantly greater value.

As awareness continues to grow, I believe lab-grown diamonds will become the preferred choice for a new generation of buyers who seek both luxury and practicality. They allow consumers to own larger, better-quality diamonds without compromise. India is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation because of its strong manufacturing capabilities and rapidly evolving consumer mindset. We are only at the beginning of what will be a major shift in the jewellery industry.

Q. Quiet luxury has become a defining fashion movement. How is this trend influencing jewellery design and consumer choices?

The quiet luxury movement has encouraged consumers to appreciate timeless elegance over overt opulence. Rather than choosing jewellery purely for its statement value, people are investing in refined pieces that speak through exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

One trend we’ve observed is the growing demand for larger solitaires set in clean, minimalist designs. These pieces offer sophistication without being flashy and transition effortlessly from everyday wear to formal occasions. Consumers today are looking for jewellery that feels personal, versatile and enduring, rather than trend-driven.

Q. How do you strike the right balance between preserving Sonani Jewels’ heritage and embracing contemporary design?

Our heritage gives us a strong foundation, while innovation allows us to remain relevant. We respect the traditions of Indian jewellery craftsmanship, but we also recognise that today’s consumers have very different lifestyles and preferences.

This is reflected in our collections. We offer contemporary designs suited for everyday wear, gifting and self-purchase, while also creating elaborate bridal and occasion jewellery that celebrates India’s rich cultural traditions. By serving both worlds, we are able to honour our legacy while continuously evolving with changing consumer tastes.

Q. What are some of the biggest changes you’ve observed in the way younger consumers approach luxury jewellery?

The younger generation approaches jewellery very differently from previous generations. For them, jewellery is less about status and more about self-expression. They’re comfortable experimenting with different designs, metals and styling choices, and they often purchase jewellery for themselves rather than waiting for life milestones.

They’re also highly informed consumers. They research extensively, compare products online and value transparency, quality and authenticity. They want jewellery that aligns with their personal identity and fits seamlessly into their everyday lives, making versatility just as important as craftsmanship.

Q. In an era of personal expression, how important is individuality in shaping the collections at Sonani Jewels?

Individuality is at the heart of modern luxury. Every customer has their own story, style and preferences, and today’s jewellery should reflect that uniqueness.

At Sonani Jewels, we focus on offering a wide assortment of designs that cater to different personalities and occasions. At the same time, we recognise the growing importance of customisation. Whether it’s selecting the perfect diamond, modifying a design or creating a bespoke piece, personalisation allows customers to own jewellery that feels truly their own.

Q. What role does innovation—whether in design, craftsmanship or retail experience—play in Sonani Jewels’ growth strategy?

Innovation is central to everything we do. As a vertically integrated company with deep expertise in lab-grown diamond technology, innovation isn’t simply part of our strategy—it’s part of our DNA.

From advanced diamond-growing technology and precision craftsmanship to contemporary design development and immersive retail experiences, we continuously invest in improving every aspect of the business. Our ability to innovate across the entire value chain enables us to deliver superior quality, exceptional value and a world-class customer experience while remaining at the forefront of the industry.

Q. Looking ahead, what trends do you believe will define the next chapter of the Indian fine jewellery industry?

The future of Indian fine jewellery will be shaped by three defining themes: sustainability, value and design innovation.

Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of where their jewellery comes from and the value it delivers. Lab-grown diamonds will continue to gain momentum as awareness grows, while demand for distinctive, contemporary designs will accelerate. At the same time, personalisation will become a major differentiator, with customers seeking jewellery that reflects their individual stories rather than simply following trends.

The brands that succeed will be those that combine craftsmanship, technological innovation and customer-centric experiences to create meaningful luxury for the modern consumer.
