Mumbai: Nataraj, one of India’s most trusted stationery brands, has launched a new campaign for its Gelix Waterproof Gel Pen, built around an everyday parenting insight: when choosing a child’s first everyday pen, parents rarely stop to think about what the child actually needs from it.
A pen is often treated as a small, functional purchase – something that simply needs to write well and fit within the school stationery list. But for children, a pen becomes an everyday learning tool. It travels from the classroom to the homework table, from school bags to exam desks, and is often exposed to the very accidents that children cannot always avoid.
This is the thought at the heart of Nataraj’s latest campaign. The film brings the insight to life through an entertaining detective story, where two young detectives investigate the mysterious “case” of a child’s ruined homework. The culprit? Parents who unknowingly chose a regular gel pen instead of one with waterproof ink.
When a glass of water spills over the child’s homework and the writing smudges, the detectives crack the case and reveal Nataraj Gelix Waterproof Gel Pen, a pen designed to combine smooth writing with waterproof ink, at an accessible MRP of just ₹6.
Turning a small stationery choice into a meaningful parenting insight
The campaign taps into a larger truth about how parents shop for children: some of the most frequently used products are also the ones they think about the least.
While parents carefully consider school bags, shoes, bottles and other essentials, the choice of a child’s pen can often become an automatic purchase. Nataraj’s Gelix campaign uses a familiar everyday mishap to make parents reconsider that choice not through instruction, but through entertainment.
The result is a simple proposition: if a pen is something your child uses every day, perhaps it deserves a little more thought.
Commenting on the campaign, Aishwarya Shinod, Chief Marketing Officer, Hindustan Pencils Pvt. Ltd., said:
“We often think deeply about the big things we buy for our children, but some of the products they use every single day become almost invisible to us. A pen is one such product. Parents may not consciously think about what their child’s first everyday pen needs to deliver until something goes wrong like a simple spill ruining hours of homework.
“That overlooked moment became the starting point for our Gelix campaign. We wanted to make parents pause and rethink a very small choice, while demonstrating a very relevant product benefit. Waterproof ink is not something you necessarily think about when buying a pen; you understand its value when you need it. The detective story allowed us to dramatise that insight in a way that is engaging, memorable and easy for both children and parents to relate to”
“For Nataraj, this is also about our larger belief in the power of insight-led storytelling. We want to build brands by understanding real moments in consumers’ lives and turning those moments into simple, entertaining stories not simply by talking about product features.”
Making product benefits matter in real life
With its waterproof ink and smooth writing performance, Gelix is designed to solve a real-world problem rather than simply add another feature to a stationery product. At an MRP of ₹6, the pen also makes the benefit accessible to a broad base of school-going consumers.
The campaign builds on Nataraj’s long-standing approach of using simple human truths to make functional product benefits memorable. By starting with a parent behaviour rather than a product feature, the brand aims to strengthen its relevance with a new generation of parents while retaining the familiarity and accessibility associated with Nataraj.
The Gelix Waterproof Gel Pen campaign is being rolled out across digital and social media platforms during the ongoing academic season, reaching students, parents and the wider school stationery market.
