ASG Eye Hospital & Vasan Eye Care Announce Month-Long Road Safety Initiative Across South India; Offers Free Eye Care for Commercial Drivers

Chennai/Bengaluru/Hyderabad, January 14, 2026In a significant move to bolster road safety across India, ASG Eye Hospital and Vasan Eye Care have announced a month-long nationwide initiative in observance of National Road Safety Week. From 11 January to 11 February, this program will lay special emphasis on supporting the thousands of drivers within state and city transport networks, encompassing bus, truck, taxi, and auto rickshaw drivers. Services will be provided to all drivers of all commercial three and four wheeler operators, including those employed with ride hailing platforms.

This program prioritizes the backbone of our public transit system, including state and city transport corporation drivers, while extending its specialized eye care services to all commercial three- and four-wheeler operators, including those employed with private ride-hailing platforms.

These drivers are invited to visit any of ASG eye hospital or Vasan Eye Care’s extensive network of hospitals to receive a complimentary comprehensive eye examination and specialist consultation. Recognising that visual impairment is a leading cause of road accidents, ASG Eye Hospital and Vasan Eye Care have pledged to provide free cataract surgeries for drivers where surgical intervention is deemed necessary. The program has set an initial target of 1,000 cataract surgeries which will be free of cost, with the capacity to scale based on regional demand.

Services will be available during hospital working hours, which typically range between 10 am to 7 or 8 pm (individual regional timings may differ). To avail of these benefits, drivers must present a valid commercial license or proof of affiliation with a transport organization. This campaign aligns with ASG Eye Hospital and Vasan Eye Care’s core mission of making world-class eye care accessible to every section of society.

Dr Vikas Jain, Group COO, ASG Eye Hospital said: “Road safety extends far beyond the steering wheel; it starts with sight. For a driver, clear vision is not just a personal asset but a public safety necessity. By offering free screenings and cataract surgeries to the driver community, Vasan Eye Care is proud to play a pivotal role in the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan, ensuring that every journey on our roadways is a safer one.”

Dr. Kamal Babu, COO, Vasan Eye Care noted, “While infrastructure is constantly improving across the Southern states, the human element, specifically clear vision remains the most vital factor in road safety. Our commercial drivers are the backbone of our logistics, and ensuring their visual fitness is our priority. This initiative is our way of supporting them with timely interventions, helping reduce accidents and meaningfully advancing the objectives of the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan.”

The initiative is a direct response to the Government of India’s Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan. With India accounting for approximately 80,000 road fatalities annually, representing 13% of the global total. The need for health-based safety interventions is critical. Vision problems, particularly undiagnosed cataracts, significantly increase the risk of collisions during night driving and long-haul travel.

ASG eye hospital and Vasan eye care have also officially tied up with private cab aggregator platforms for the efficient roll out of this campaign.
