10 ways Amazon is prioritising associate safety and well-being this festive season

From climate controlled facilities built with advanced engineering systems, enhanced safety measures to rest centres on the go, Amazon India has several industry-leading initiatives for the safety of its associates

At Amazon India, ensuring a safe, supportive, and comfortable work environment for our employees, associates, and partners is a year-round priority, backed by an investment of over ₹2,800 crore to expand infrastructure and strengthen safety, health and financial wellbeing measures. As Amazon scales its operations to serve millions of customers ahead of the festive season, the focus remains on creating a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for everyone who powers our network.

Here are 10 ways we’re prioritising associate safety this festive season:

1. Ashray rest centres for delivery associates

Amazon India’s Project Ashray is an industry-first initiative creating dedicated rest stops for delivery associates across Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Chennai, Mumbai among others. Amazon has more than 100 Ashray centers across the country. These centres are open to all delivery associates, regardless of the company they work for, and offer air-conditioned seating, drinking water, electrolytes, charging points, clean washrooms, first-aid and parking facilities for them. Amazon has also introduced Mobile Ashray vans, air-conditioned rest units for delivery drivers stationed at high footfall areas.

Operating daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., these centres ensure delivery associates can rest and rejuvenate when they are out on the road for delivery.

2. Medical facilities and welfare initiatives

Amazon’s large fulfillment and sortation centres are equipped with medical units staffed by trained professionals, ensuring immediate support when needed. Associates receive training to identify symptoms of heat stress and guidance from medical experts on preventive care. Women associates are supported with menstrual leave provisions and sanitary pad dispensing machines.

3. Heat Index monitoring inside all our buildings

Amazon’s buildings are temperature-controlled and we have installed advanced heat index monitoring systems that measure both heat and humidity, a key factor that defines workplace comfort. We actively monitor weather conditions and take necessary actions, including adjusting workflows, providing additional breaks, or temporarily pausing operations when needed.

4. Hydration protocols across facilities

Cold and hot water dispensers, along with electrolyte supplements, are available across Amazon’s operations facilities. Comprehensive heat-management protocols—such as scheduled job rotations, hydration breaks, and wellness guidelines—are integrated into daily operations. Associates are empowered to take informal breaks to stay hydrated and safe.

5. Air-conditioned breakrooms and resting points

Facilities are equipped with air-conditioned breakrooms, cafeteria and chill zones to allow associates to recharge. For line-haul and truck drivers, resting points with refreshments, water, and cooling options provide relief between long journeys. Our buildings also include cooling measures like ACs, ventilation, fans, and spot coolers.

6. Health check-ups, medical camps, and accessibility

Amazon recently expanded health and insurance benefits for nearly 90,000 delivery associates across India. Mediclaim coverage has been increased up to ₹1.5 lakh, OPD expenses of up to ₹10,000 are now covered, and Group Personal Accident coverage has been expanded up to ₹10 lakh. Wellness benefits extend to associates and up to three family members, and include unlimited multilingual virtual doctor consultations and two free OPD visits per family each year. These benefits will be rolled out across all last-mile program.

Amazon has also organised nationwide health camps, in collaboration with a third-party insurer, providing free eye examinations, dental check-ups, BMI assessments, and general physician consultations at delivery stations across India. These camps focus on proactive health screening and heat-risk identification, especially during the summer months. Programmes such as Sushruta, a health and wellness programme for long-haul truck drivers and their family members, will continue to expand alongside a new wellness programme focused on mental health and ergonomic care.

7. Route optimisation and integrated breaks

For delivery associates, our approach focuses on continued on-ground support across our sites and on the road. This includes delivery app-initiated break reminders, reduction in number of packages where required, sensitisation on heat mitigation, emergency helpline access, and no-cost ambulance support. Defensive driving training and Driver Vehicle Inspection Checks (DVICs) are conducted during the monsoon season to ensure vehicles are road-ready and associates are equipped for safe driving.

8. Emergency ambulance support

Through our partnership with Dial 4242, delivery associates have access to no-cost ambulance services via their app or hotline. The service connects to the nearest available life-support ambulance, ensuring timely response in emergencies.

9. Supporting work-life harmony

We support work-life harmony through a five-day working policy with two weekly off-days, allowing associates time to rest and recharge. In addition, they are entitled to annual, sick, and casual leave as per state rules, ensuring flexibility to manage unplanned situations such as illness or family emergencies.

10. Financial wellbeing and security

Amazon India supports associates with the Early Access to Pay (EATP) programme, allowing withdrawal of up to 80% of accrued salary for urgent needs. Financial awareness is strengthened through online learning and Samriddhi camps. In 2026, through Samriddhi, Amazon will enable tens of thousands of associates and more than 200,000 community members to access government benefits such as e-Shram cards, health insurance, pension programmes, and educational assistance. Amazon also announced Sammaan, a comprehensive welfare program for thousands of delivery associates in Amazon’s logistics network. Initiatives include scholarships for the education of associates’ children, enabling access to government benefits and financial inclusion programs, comprehensive insurance coverage, on-road safety measures and more.

Associates also receive statutory benefits such as PF, ESIC, and gratuity, along with additional coverage through Group Mediclaim, Personal Accident, and Term Insurance. Beyond workplace safety, Amazon supports the broader wellbeing of associates and their families. Through the Pratidhi Scholarship, Amazon provides education assistance and mentorship to 5,000 children of associates across its operations network, including children with disabilities.

These measures reflect Amazon’s ongoing effort to balance operational excellence with associate wellbeing, ensuring that the summer months remain a positive and safe experience for everyone in our network.
