As the popularity of IoT devices increase in our world, the need for 5G technologies become crucial. These years there also have been an immense pull towards cloud computing by many IT giants. Many enterprises have also considered cloud computing as safer and central to their IT architecture. But as more and more IoT devices get integrated, a multi-cloud strategy of compute becomes essential. The edge computing will bring compute, storage and networking closer to the end users. These multi-cloud strategy with increased number of IoT devices require high-bandwidth which could be possible with 5G networks. Organizations will sooner start to demand private networks, therefore tech giants are devising a two sided strategy that is to sell edge compute to Telcos who indeed sell to companies investing in private networks.

  • Dell Technologies

The Dell Technologies have developed a variety of edge computing products made particularly for both operator and enterprise needs. Their technology is also designed for functioning in difficult environmental conditions and containerized data centers.

“Cloud services will extend onto premises of enterprise and SMB, but the central offices and backhaul aggregation sites, even the cell will become the edge of the telco network,” says, Kevin Shatzkamer, VP/GM of Service Provider Solutions, Dell Technologies. The telcos will really benefit from the revenue generated from real-time services such as virtual reality, vehicle automation, robotics and other AI applications which all require a combination of 5G and edge computing.

  • IBM

During its think digital conference, IBM had discussed the merging of 5G, edge computing and hybrid-cloud computing models. IBM also had introduced its Edge Ecosystem which aims at bringing open cloud related solutions that could be managed independently at the edge. It brings out new edge related solution to both carriers and enterprises. The edge products announced at the IBM think digital conference are, IBM Edge Application Manager to operate AI, analytics and IoT workloads, IBM Visual Insights, IBM Production Optimization, IBM Connected Manufacturing, IBM Asset Optimization, IBM Maximo Worker Insights and IBM Visual Inspector and the IBM Telco Network Cloud Manager.

  • Microsoft

The company is planning to implement and working around supporting 5G applications to its Azure Edge Zones, the edge computing services offered by Microsoft. Microsoft had been recently joining hands with Telcos such as AT&T on integrating edge computing capabilities with 5G networks and Azure cloud services.
