Ahmedabad, November 24, 2022: A team of doctors from Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, saved the life of a 40-year-old senior official of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) who met with a fatal accident on the Ahmedabad-Baroda Expressway. The BMC official was treated for severe brain, chest, and facial injuries for nearly a month and discharged from the hospital recently.

The 40-year-old woman, a resident of Mumbai, was on her way to the Statue of Unity along with her family of four when the car met with a fatal accident on the Ahmedabad-Baroda Expressway. The vehicle rolled over four times. While all the five members in the car were injured, the senior BMC official suffered life-threatening injuries.

The family was initially taken to the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad, on October 28 and later brought to Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, in the early hours of October 29. The senior BMC official was admitted with severe brain, facial and chest injuries. She was unconscious and having respiratory troubles too and hence was put on a ventilator and stabilized.

Upon further examination, the team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad discovered that the patient was suffering from polytrauma, with a Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Leak, which causes clear fluid to leak from the nose and eyes. Besides this, the left eye of the patient was distorted with a possibility of vision loss and she had multiple facial injuries (faciomaxillory).

First a brain surgery was performed to prevent haemorrhage and CSF leak by Neurosurgeon Dr Somesh Desai and Trauma Surgeon Dr Sanjay Shah on November 1 followed by a facial bone fracture surgery by Plastic Surgeons Dr Srikant Lagvankar and Dr Kamlesh Wadhwani on November 9.

The patient was then moved to the ICU. The further treatment and recovery was monitored by Critical Care Specialist Dr Manoj Singh for three weeks. She was removed from the ventilator on November 17 and she revived her left eye vision on November 20. After a successful recovery and treatment received by the experts at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, the BMC official was discharged on November 22.

Speaking about the gravity of the case, Dr Sanjay Shah, Trauma Surgeon, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, said, “The chances of survival in cases of such fatal accidents is very low and the risk of comatose condition is extremely high. The chances of recovering successfully in cases with polytrauma are also very less. With the continuous efforts of the team of doctors at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, we were able to save the patient’s life as well as vision.”
