ASAVARI & Guru Shovana Narayan present Kadambari: The Poet’s Muse, followed by an engaging dialogue on Tagore’s modern relevance at Kamani Auditorium, New Delhi

New Delhi, March 18th, 2026: An evocative evening of dance and intellectual engagement unfolded at Kamani Auditorium on March 18th, 2026, as ASAVARI, under the artistic direction of Guru Shovana Narayan, presented Kadambari: The Poet’s Muse, followed by an interactive session titled “Revisiting Tagore – Symbol of Modern Indian Consciousness.”

The event was graced by an eminent gathering including Sangita Saxena (First Lady designate to Ladakh), Sharmila Tagore (legendary film actor), Ambassador Pavan Varma (former Rajya Sabha MP), Henna Rakheja (journalist), Dr. Manju Arif (educationist), Dr. Jyotsna Suri (Chairperson & MD, The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group), Ustad Amjad Ali Khan along with Subhalakshmi Khan, Ustad Wasifuddin Dagar, Kiran Chopra (Director, Punjab Kesari), among others.

The production brought alive the poignant and layered persona of Kadambari Devi, exploring her role as the creative muse of Rabindranath Tagore through a compelling dance narrative. Seamlessly blending performance with discourse, the evening offered both an artistic interpretation and a reflective dialogue on Tagore’s enduring relevance as a symbol of modern Indian consciousness.

The narrative traced the deeply moving life of Kadambari Devi—married at a young age into the Tagore household, navigating an emotionally distant marriage, and finding intellectual companionship in the young Tagore. As his confidante, critic, and muse, she played a significant yet often understated role in his creative evolution. Personal tragedies, emotional isolation, and shifting familial dynamics culminated in her untimely demise in 1884, leaving a profound impact on the poet’s life and work.

Quoting Tagore’s own words, the production underscored the depth of this loss: “She, my Queen, has died and my world has shut against the door of its inner apartment of beauty which gives the real taste of freedom.”

For Guru Shovana Narayan, the production emerges from a lifelong engagement with Tagore’s literary and philosophical universe. Having grown up in a culturally rich environment deeply influenced by Rabindra Sangeet and Indian classical traditions, her artistic journey has consistently revisited Tagore’s works.

Speaking about the inspiration behind the production, she shared“This long association with Tagore evoked a natural interest in the life of this extraordinarily talented visionary. In this journey, the mysterious Kadambari fascinated me immensely and culminated in this dance enactment.”

Adding to the evening’s appreciation, Sangita Saxena remarked, “Shovana ji always surpasses expectations. What we saw today was pure gold flowing on the stage. Her expressions were to die for—so soft and yet so bold. I congratulate the team as well, what an electrifying performance.

Echoing the sentiment, Sharmila Tagore shared, “I am absolutely spellbound. You brought out every aspect of Gurudev and Kadambari—the youthfulness and closeness we are all so familiar with. I am fortunate to have witnessed this today.

Developed through extensive research and collaboration, the script by Zakia Zaheer draws upon Tagore’s writings and scholarly inputs from Prof. Aruna Chakravarti, Averee Chaurey, and Dr. Minoti Chatterjee, with certain sequences inspired by Chakravarti’s novel Jorasanko. Presented in the Kathak idiom, the production remains deeply rooted in Rabindra Sangeet, with music direction by Madho Prasad.

Minimalist yet evocative stage design ensured that the emotional depth of Kadambari’s journey remained central, allowing audiences to connect intimately with her story and her enduring legacy as the poet’s muse.
