‘Bhalobasa Bengal – Inspiring Bharat’: CNN-News18 Kolkata Town Hall Celebrates Spirit of Bengal

Bengal has always been known for its rich culture, creativity and ideas. From literature and art to music and cinema, it has shaped the way India thinks, creates and expresses itself. Celebrating this spirit, CNN-News18, India’s leading English news channel, brings its Kolkata Town Hall on April 20, 2026 and putting the spotlight on the people, stories and cultural legacy of Bengal.

Themed ‘Bhalobasa Bengal – Inspiring Bharat’, this special edition celebrates the spirit of Bengal and how its culture, creativity and ideas continue to inspire the country. It is a tribute to a state whose cultural influence has consistently shaped India’s artistic and intellectual identity.

What sets this Town Hall apart is also its unique setting. Hosted aboard a cruise on the iconic Hooghly River, the event draws from currents that have witnessed Bengal’s evolution, from colonial crossroads to a cradle of reform, art and intellectual ferment.

The speaker lineup reflects this ethos, bringing together voices from across disciplines. Cultural icons like Mithun Chakraborty (Actor and former Member of Rajya Sabha) and Sreenanda Shankar (Indian actress and model) will share their perspectives. They will be joined by Bengal’s daring Devis such as Tanya Sanyal (the first woman firefighter in Indian aviation), Ipsita Chakraborty (the first woman bartender from Kolkata) and Reshma Nilofer Visalakshi (Nari Shakti awardee, Marine Pilot), who will bring stories of courage and breaking barriers.

While music will find expression through the celebrated Indian pianist-vocalist duo Sourendro and Soumyojit. Public life and governance will be represented with voices like Smriti Irani (Actor & former Minister of Education of India), Leander Paes (Former tennis player), Saira Shah Halim (Lok Sabha Candidate-Kolkata South), Keya Ghosh (BJP Leader) and Rekha Patra (BJP) connecting governance with grassroots realities and cultural identity.

Figures like Roopa Ganguly (Actress & Former Member of Rajya Sabha) and Babul Supriyo (Member of Rajya Sabha) will add further depth, bridging the worlds of art and public service.

Speaking about the upcoming event, Rahul Shivshankar, Editorial Affairs Director, CNN-News18, said, “Bengal has long inspired and shaped India’s political, cultural and intellectual fabric, and with the upcoming Kolkata Town Hall edition themed ‘Bhalobasa Bengal – Inspiring Bharat’, we celebrate the voices that carry that legacy forward, where culture, creativity and lived experiences continue to inspire the rest of the country.”

Adding to it, Smriti Mehra, CEO – English & Business News, Network18, said, “Bengal’s stories, its art, its rich culture, they don’t just resonate within the state; they resonate across Bharat. As Bengal heads towards the polls, with the Kolkata Town Hall edition, we are celebrating its biggest stakeholders– the people, their culture, and its enduring legacy. As a leading English news channel, we see it as our responsibility to bring these voices and stories to the forefront.”
