India, 20th July, 2026: The Department of Tourism, Government of Bihar and HistoryTV18 present ‘Bihar – The Land Of Art & Crafts’, a two-part special that celebrates the state’s remarkable artistic heritage and the generations of artisans who continue to keep its traditions alive.
Across the two episodes, the series explores Bihar as a land where art is not just preserved in museums or memory, but lived through everyday practice. From painting and embroidery to handwoven silk, terracotta, stone carving and grass craft, the special takes viewers into regions and communities where creativity has shaped cultural identity, supported livelihoods and carried stories across generations.
The first episode journeys through some of Bihar’s most celebrated art forms, including Madhubani or Mithila painting, known for its vivid colours, geometric patterns and mythological themes; Sujni embroidery, where fabric becomes a medium for memory, emotion and social expression; the state’s ancient tradition of stone carving, associated with Gaya, Nalanda and Patna; and terracotta craft, where clay is shaped into objects of faith, beauty and daily life.
The second episode turns the spotlight on other distinctive traditions from the state. It explores Bhagalpuri silk, also known as Tussar silk, whose handwoven textures have earned recognition far beyond Bihar; Sikki grass craft, an eco-friendly tradition closely associated with Mithila and women’s economic empowerment; Manjusha painting from Bhagalpur, rooted in the folklore of Bihula-Bishahari; and Tikuli art, which evolved from the traditional craft of ornamental bindis into a contemporary decorative art form.
Together, the two episodes present a layered portrait of Bihar’s artistic landscape, tracing how these traditions have moved from homes, local rituals and community practices to national and global platforms. The series also highlights the role of craft traditions in sustaining livelihoods, empowering women and preserving intergenerational knowledge.
By bringing these stories to viewers across the country, the Department of Tourism, Government of Bihar and HistoryTV18 aim to showcase Bihar as a destination of deep cultural wealth, living heritage and creative excellence.
