Disha Eye Hospitals performs East India’s first SMILE® Pro Hyperopia procedure

Disha Eye Hospitals successfully performed East India’s first SMILE® Pro Hyperopia procedure, marking an important milestone in advanced vision correction in the region. The procedure was performed by Dr. Ayan Mohanta at Disha Eye Hospitals using SMILE® Pro technology on a 24-year-old patient.

Following its recent regulatory approval in India, SMILE® Pro Hyperopia offers a minimally invasive laser vision correction option for selected patients with hyperopia, commonly known as “plus power,” with or without astigmatism. Until now, SMILE® Pro laser vision correction has been more commonly associated with treating myopia, or “minus power.” The availability of SMILE® Pro Hyperopia expands the range of patients who can explore advanced vision correction options.

Unlike conventional laser vision correction procedures that may involve creating a flap on the cornea, SMILE® Pro uses advanced femtosecond laser technology through a small incision. It is designed to correct refractive errors through a minimally invasive, flapless approach. The procedure can be used to treat both farsightedness and nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, depending on the patient’s suitability.

Commenting on the milestone, Dipu Bose, Head – Medical Technology, ZEISS India and Neighbouring Markets, said, “For a long time, laser vision correction has largely been associated with myopia/nearsightedness. With the availability of ZEISS SMILE pro for Hyperopia, we are now bringing a safe, highly predictable, and gentle solution to suitable patients with farsightedness. The successful procedure at Disha Eye Hospitals marks an important milestone for Eastern India, offering patients a flapless treatment with an ultra-fast laser exposure time of under 13 seconds per eye. Our collaboration with Disha Eye Hospital combines advanced ZEISS VISUMAX 800 technology with strong clinical expertise, helping eye-care professionals offer more personalised vision correction options and a quicker return to daily activities.”

Dr. Ayan Mohanta, Ophthalmologist, UnSpecX – A Unit of Disha Eye Hospitals, said, “The introduction of SMILE® Pro Hyperopia is an important advancement in refractive care, particularly for suitable patients with hyperopia. While awareness around laser vision correction has traditionally focused on myopia, there is a need to improve understanding of the available options for correcting hyperopia. Greater awareness can help patients recognize their condition, seek timely professional evaluation and understand the vision-correction options that may be available to them. Our patient has been recovering well following the procedure. By bringing this advanced technology to Eastern India we want to provide access to newer refractive solutions for our patients.”

Hyperopia is more common in early childhood and generally decreases with age as the eyeball lengthens in size, a natural process known as emmetropization. Studies have found higher rates among children aged 5–7 years, with prevalence typically declining during the teenage years.

Patient suitability for SMILE® Pro Hyperopia depends on factors such as refractive power, corneal parameters, age, prescription stability and overall eye health. A detailed pre-operative eye examination is required to determine whether the procedure is appropriate for an individual patient. SMILE® Pro Hyperopia further strengthens the range of refractive solutions available under UnSpecX by Disha Eye Hospitals. UnSpecX offers customised vision-correction options, allowing specialists to recommend an appropriate solution based on a patient’s refractive power, corneal profile, lifestyle and visual needs.

With this milestone, Disha Eye Hospitals and ZEISS further strengthen their collaboration in advancing refractive eye care in Eastern India, bringing newer vision-correction technologies closer to suitable patients and increasing awareness of the options available for hyperopia correction.
