India, June 12, 2026: District by Zomato, the going out platform announced the launch of ‘Splitpay’, a one-of-its-kind feature designed to eliminate the social and financial friction of group dining. Built directly into the District app, Splitpay allows everyone at the table to settle their share on the spot, replacing the familiar end-of-meal routine of one person paying and the rest settling up later through transfers and reminders.
Group dining should be about conversation and not mathematics. Splitpay aims to remove the friction: no working out who owes what, no chasing payments the next day, no screenshots of the bill in the group chat. Split it equally or customise it on the app while paying the restaurant, turning a tedious chore into a natural extension of the dining experience.
No payment details change hands. A user can enter the bill amount, select the number of people, the group splits the bill and everyone pays in a few taps inside the District app. There is no simpler way to split the bill.
Each diner also earns cashback on their individual share.
Commenting on the launch, Rahul Ganjoo, CEO, District by Zomato, said, “A meal out belongs to the whole table, but it has always ended with the least social moment: one person paying and everyone else doing maths. It’s something we noticed at restaurant tables, on social media, and in conversations with our users, so we built Splitpay to fix it. It’s one more step in the same direction we’ve been moving all along: taking the effort out of every stage of going out, so the only thing people take home is the experience itself.”
To anchor the launch, District has released a campaign film starring veteran actors Boman Irani and Anupam Kher as two friends locked in the familiar ritual of fighting over who pays at the end of a meal. The tussle escalates from a polite reach for the bill to a full physical scuffle, hilariously peaking with Anupam Kher stuffing the bill into his mouth to stop his friend from paying. While the commercial mines this hyper-relatable cultural quirk for pure comedy, it quickly contrasts the chaos with a smarter reality: rather than one person covering the whole table, Splitpay lets each diner settle their exact share on the spot and collect cashback, a reward no longer reserved for whoever reaches the bill first.
