Bengaluru, 12 August 2026: Gleneagles BGS Hospital, Kengeri, Bengaluru (part of the Fortis Healthcare Network), marked World Organ Donation Day with its annual commemorative event, ‘A Legacy That Lives On.’ The event brought together 120+ organ donor families and featured a sky lantern tribute in memory of their loved ones. The occasion also marked the hospital’s milestone of performing more than 1,500 organ transplants and paid tribute to donors through its India’s largest organ donation recognition wall, located at Gleneagles BGS Hospital.
The donor recognition wall, first established in 2022, currently features the names of 150+ organ donors and measures 24 ft by 10 ft. The wall has a capacity to accommodate 800+ donor names and serves as a permanent memorial recognising the selfless contribution of organ donors and their families.
Gleneagles BGS Hospital has successfully performed more than 1,500 organ transplants, with an overall 98% success rate. The transplant programme includes over 1,000 kidney transplants, more than 350 liver transplants, over 20 lung transplants, 12 combined liver and kidney transplants, more than seven heart transplants, and 12 combined kidney and pancreas transplants. These milestones reflect the hospital’s multidisciplinary expertise and capabilities in delivering advanced transplant care across multiple organ specialties.
The sky lantern tribute formed a key part of the day’s programme, with 120+ donor families participating in the ceremony to remember their loved ones and celebrate the lives transformed through their decision to donate.
Despite significant advances in transplantation, the need for organ donation remains critical in India. According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India performed a record 20,138 organ transplants in 2025, yet the country’s organ donation rate remains below one donor per million population. With a single deceased organ donor capable of saving up to eight lives, increasing public awareness and encouraging more individuals to pledge their organs remains vital to bridging the gap between demand and availability.
The commemorative programme was led by Dr. Anil Kumar B T, HOD and Sr Consultant – Nephrologist and Transplant Physician; Dr. Mahesh Gopasetty, HOD & Lead Consultant – Liver Transplant & HPB Surgeon; and Dr. Umesh Narappa, Consultant – Cardiovascular Surgeon.
