Indian Sign Language Workshop at Kochi Biennale on February 22

Kochi: As part of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, an Indian Sign Language (ISL) workshop will be organized on February 22 in collaboration with the Kerala Museum. The event is organized as part of Afra Esema’s “Mild Tooth of Milk,” one of the notable exhibitions at the Biennale held at the Dutch Warehouse in Fort Kochi. Hardeep Singh and Abhirami P.S., members of the Museum of Art and Photography (MAP), will lead the session.

The workshop, titled “Learn ISL – Kochi Edition,” will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This workshop will explain how to communicate effectively beyond sound using hands, facial expressions, and body movements. The workshop will also discuss how to foster empathy and security through conversations and how complex subjects can be presented simply through sign language. Interested participants from both the Deaf and hearing communities can pre-register via the link: https://map-india.org/map-events/isl-walkthrough-mild-tooth-of-milk/.

Following this, a guided tour of the “Mild Tooth of Milk” exhibition will be organized from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Indian Sign Language will be the primary medium of communication in this unique tour of the artwork led by the Deaf. The walk through the exhibition will provide an opportunity to enjoy the visual beauty and tactile experience of the soft carpets, clay sculptures, and diverse textiles, and to understand art through the perspective of the Deaf community. It offers a simple and interesting experience, moving away from traditional learning methods. For more information: +91 73568 42839, +91 70934 00864.
