As living in the digital age most of our lives has also started to mainly revolve around the clouds that is the cloud storage and also the services. However, there is still a need for tethering to the physical realities and has also limited by these physical storage solutions. And all these cloud storage which we are using are collaborated and these files are stored in the old but proven technology of the hard disks.

Researchers from Microsoft are looking mostly into the old but new idea of using holograms for storing data in a small physical space. The idea of using hologram storage is not only the new method but the time has come now to take root. Using the cloud storage has created a particular need from the hot storage and this storage can give access to data in large amounts that can be too expensive especially for the flash storage. This is the main reason why even though due to inherent slowness hard drives with the mechanical parts and also magnetic disks have been the main storage choice for cloud storage and services.

And by using the hologram all these problems can be solved and may also come with an extra perk for this particular use case. These hologram storage takes large amounts of data into its small areas of the crystals by a simple method of changing the angle of the light being shone on it. Apart from the other Microsoft research’s glass-based project silica, this holographic storage data is different it is erasable with the help of the UV light and can also be rewritten similarly like regular HDD or SDD.

Even though the crystal holographic storage itself is small but the equipment needs for the reading and writing into it is not small. Cloud storage has already made the use of the large racks for holding hard drives hence it won’t be any problem. Also, the HSD equipment can even turn out to be more compact by allowing data storage manufacturers for cram capacity in the same space just like the regular rack.

Microsoft researcher has still many work to do for improving these data access rates without any mechanical movement but the Microsoft expertise is more confident that AI can help them in moving forward.
