Bhopal, 17th July 2026: Mushroom World’s AlgaeTree™, a Bhopal-based innovation and India’s first commercialised Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) solution, is expanding its footprint beyond its home city. The microalgae-based carbon capture system has been deployed at the IOCL Gujarat Refinery campus in Vadodara and Amanora Park Town, a premium township in Maharashtra. With these deployments, AlgaeTree™ is extending its presence from public spaces into large industrial facilities and premium real estate developments across India.
The Bhopal-based AlgaeTree™ has attracted interest from corporates, industrial units, real estate developers, educational institutions, and public infrastructure projects nationwide, as well as early commercial inquiries from international markets, including the UAE and Malaysia.
As Indian cities expand rapidly, traditional tree plantation is often constrained by land availability in traffic corridors, factory plants, parking areas, airports, hospitals, and dense commercial zones. Not replacing, but supporting natural tree cover in India’s push toward its 2070 net-zero target, AlgaeTree™ is designed as a complementary green infrastructure solution for urban confined places. It absorbs 1.5 tonnes of carbon annually per photobioreactor unit, which is equivalent to what a fully grown mature tree absorbs in 25 years.
AlgaeTree™ houses a dense culture of microalgae within a specially designed photobioreactor that captures ambient or flue-gas carbon dioxide. Through photosynthesis, the microalgae convert the captured carbon into oxygen and biomass at significantly higher rates than conventional green plants. The harvested biomass can be repurposed into products such as biopellets and fertilisers, while the entire process is continuously monitored through AI
Emphasising the importance of carbon management, Mr. Sameer Sagar, Director & Co-Founder, Mushroom World Group, said: “Organisations today want real, measurable environmental action, not just green optics. Our vision is to develop customised carbon management solutions for cities, industries and modern infrastructure projects.”
Shakti Sagar, Director & Co-Founder, Mushroom World Group, added, “India has the potential to lead the world in green technology. Our next goal is to expand AlgaeTree™ to major cities across the country and prepare it for the international market, marking a strong symbol of Made-in-India climate innovation.”
As part of its expansion strategy, Mushroom World Group is building a network of AlgaeTree™ installations across major Indian cities while developing compact indoor units for offices, hotels, hospitals, educational institutions, premium residences and airports, along with customised systems for transport hubs and public spaces. The company is also advancing export-ready models, hybrid systems powered by renewable energy, smart monitoring capabilities, and ion-based air treatment technology, which is currently undergoing testing and validation.
Developed over two years by a team of more than 50 scientists, researchers, and engineers, AlgaeTree™ represents an emerging green infrastructure model built in India, for India, and increasingly, for the world.
About AlgaeTree™:
AlgaeTree™ is a ‘Green Vision’ by Mushroom World Group, developing microalgae-based photobioreactor systems for carbon capture and air purification in urban environments. Founded in 2024 by Shakti Sagar and Sameer Sagar under the Mushroom World Group umbrella and headquartered in Bhopal, AlgaeTree™ is steered operationally and technically by Vaibhav Shrivastav, Chief Operating Officer, and Prateek Maheshwari, Chief Technical Officer. Together, they bring biotechnology, AI-powered monitoring, and sustainable design to work toward a self-sustaining carbon-capturing device for confined urban spaces.
