Passionate in Marketing – In Conversation With Mr. Vivek Kapoor, CTO, Best Power Equipments (India) Pvt. Ltd.

1. With power requirements becoming increasingly complex across data centres, telecom, manufacturing and other critical infrastructure, what are the key technology trends you believe will shape the next generation of power management and backup systems in India?

I see three major trends shaping the next generation of power systems: higher efficiency, intelligent monitoring and greater integration between power conversion and energy storage.

As power infrastructure becomes more complex, customers need systems that can not only provide reliable backup but also monitor performance, optimise energy usage and respond to changing loads. For us, the focus is on building solutions that are more intelligent, efficient and application-specific.

2. BPE has been working across UPS, power distribution, energy storage and data centre solutions. From a technology standpoint, what are the biggest challenges in designing power solutions that can deliver both reliability and efficiency for mission-critical applications?

The biggest challenge is that reliability and efficiency cannot be viewed in isolation. In a mission-critical environment, the system has to perform consistently under different operating conditions, while also keeping energy losses and operating costs under control.

From an engineering perspective, this means getting the architecture, power electronics, thermal management, controls and overall system design right. It also requires extensive testing and validation before a product reaches the field.

At BPE, we look at the complete application rather than just the individual product. The solution has to perform reliably in the real operating environment and be practical to maintain.

3. As India continues to build its data centre and digital infrastructure, how do you see the role of UPS and intelligent power management evolving beyond traditional backup power?

The UPS is moving from being a purely backup system to becoming an active part of the data centre’s power architecture.

As power densities increase, UPS systems will need to contribute not only to continuity but also to power quality, system visibility and better utilisation of energy. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) will also increasingly complement UPS systems and conventional backup infrastructure. This will make power systems more flexible and better integrated with the overall energy strategy.

4. BPE has a strong focus on designing and manufacturing products in India. What are the key areas where Indian power electronics companies need to strengthen their R&D and engineering capabilities to compete with global players?

India has a strong engineering talent pool, but the next step is to convert that capability into deeper product development and technology ownership.

We need to continue investing in core power electronics, embedded systems, controls, thermal management, testing and product engineering. Localisation should not only mean manufacturing a product in India. It should mean developing the capability to design, test, improve and customise the technology here.

This deeper engineering capability will be critical for Indian companies looking to compete globally on technology, reliability and product quality.

5. With your experience across UPS technologies, SMPS engineering, product development and localisation projects, how has the power electronics industry evolved over the past two decades, and what technological shifts do you expect to see over the next five years?

The industry has become much more application-driven. Earlier, the primary focus was on reliable power conversion and backup. Today, customers also expect higher efficiency, better power density, intelligent monitoring and greater flexibility.

Over the next five years, I expect stronger integration of power electronics, energy storage and digital technologies. We will also see greater use of analytics and predictive capabilities to improve how energy systems are managed.

6. As CTO, what are the key innovation priorities for BPE going forward, particularly in terms of developing future-ready power solutions for India and international markets?

Our priority is to develop solutions that are reliable, scalable and suited to evolving power requirements.

We are strengthening our capabilities across UPS, energy storage and intelligent power management, with a focus on application-specific solutions for industries, data centres and critical infrastructure. At the same time, we are building products in India that can meet the requirements of international markets.

The goal is to address today’s requirements while also preparing for the next generation of power and energy infrastructure.
