Sunburn Festival announces its 19th edition; elevates the flagship festival with a landmark move to Mahalaxmi Racecourse and a reimagined two-day power-packed format

With a central venue, a high-impact two-day format and a grand closing at NSCI Dome, Sunburn Festival sharpens its focus on delivering its most immersive and accessible experience yet

National, May 8, 2026: Every December, as the year edges towards its final countdown, a familiar surge begins to build – one that doesn’t belong to a single city, but to an entire community. It lives in anticipation, in memories that resurface and in plans that feel almost ritualistic. Over nearly two decades, Sunburn Festival has transformed from a pioneering music event into a cultural phenomenon – one that defines how India celebrates music, scale and togetherness.

This edition, Sunburn Festival 2026 will take place on December 18th and 19th, 2026, with the festival moving to the heart of the entertainment capital, Mahalaxmi Racecourse, one of Mumbai’s most iconic and centrally located live event venues. Known for hosting some of Sunburn’s landmark live moments in the city over the years, from Avicii’s early India performance in 2011 and the iconic Swedish House Mafia’s in 2013 to Martin Garrix’s indelible show in 2016 and Keinemusik’s recent spectacle this year, the venue brings with it both scale and accessibility, enabling a more seamless experience for fans travelling from across the city and beyond. Its central connectivity and familiarity as a large-format event space position it as a natural evolution for a festival of Sunburn’s stature.

Alongside the venue, Sunburn Festival 2026 will introduce a reimagined format. This edition will be distilled into a more concentrated, high-energy two-day experience, designed to deliver sharper programming and a more immersive flow of power-packed performances. The celebration will culminate in a massive closing party at NSCI Dome on December 20th, extending the experience into a high-impact finale after the headliner’s crescendo at the Racecourse. Together, these changes reflect a deliberate shift towards enhanced immersion and connectivity, placing fan experience at the centre of every decision.

The scale of Sunburn Festival’s cultural impact is also reflected in the motivations and behaviour of its audience. Insights from a survey conducted with fans that attended Sunburn Festival 2025 reveal that nearly 81% of respondents were driven by the festival’s unparalleled vibe and energy and drawn to its cutting-edge visual and stage production. The festival’s pull extends far beyond its host city as close to 50% respondents travelled from outside Mumbai as ardent fans of performing artists and the genre. At its core, Sunburn Festival remains a shared experience, with over 56% of attendees choosing to experience it alongside friends, reinforcing its role as a collective cultural ritual.

Speaking on the announcement, Karan Singh, CEO, Sunburn, said, “Sunburn Festival has always been built with the audience at its core, evolving each year into a defining cultural tradition for India’s music community to create experiences that are not just larger, but more meaningful and immersive. The move to Mumbai has played a significant role in this evolution, allowing us to reach new audiences while strengthening our core community, representing everything that has been building over the years – a moment where the festival’s identity, energy and vision come together in a way that is ready to stand alongside the world’s most iconic music festivals. As we enter our 19th edition, every decision – from moving to a venue like Mahalaxmi Racecourse to reimagining the festival format – has been made with a clear focus on enhancing how fans experience the festival. Our ambition is to continue setting benchmarks for live entertainment in India while aligning with global standards, where scale, storytelling and community come together in a more powerful way than ever before.”

In 2026, the festival takes on a new dimension with the unveiling of its theme, ‘Awaken the Core’. It is not just a creative direction but a reflection of Sunburn Festival’s own evolution. Years of building scale, pushing boundaries and redefining live experiences have led to this moment, where the festival’s energy feels more concentrated, more immersive and more powerful than ever before. It signals a shift from spectacle to depth, from scale to intensity – an experience that mirrors the raw, collective force of the audience it brings together.

What began as an introduction to global electronic music in 2007 has steadily evolved into a tradition that thousands return to year after year. Sunburn Festival is no longer just about who is on stage; it is about the collective experience – the moments between sets, the friendships forged in crowds and the unmistakable energy that has come to define the festival’s identity.

In its current chapter, Mumbai has amplified this legacy. The city has not only elevated the scale of the festival but has also unlocked a new wave of audiences, bringing together fans from across the country. Today, Sunburn Festival in Mumbai stands at the intersection of legacy and expansion, where long-time attendees and first-time festivalgoers come together in a shared cultural moment.

With the dates now set and a new chapter unveiled, Sunburn Festival 2026 sets the stage for what lies ahead. As anticipation builds, be prepared for a stellar line-up with a string of immersive experiences, shaping what promises to be one of the most defining editions of the festival yet.

Because this December, what lies beneath is ready to rise.
