Bengaluru, June 08, 2026: When a 70-year-old woman from Kota, Rajasthan, was suddenly diagnosed with advanced lung cancer following seemingly usual cough symptoms, the world came crashing down for her family. Following initial diagnosis and treatment, when the disease progressed further, a review of her genomic test results provided crucial insights that helped clinicians take the treatment in the right direction, helping her fight the disease and live a normal life.
Patient outcomes in cancer care depend on how early the disease is detected and how effectively it can be treated. Cancer continues to be a major public health challenge in India, largely due to a significant proportion of patients diagnosed at advanced stages of the disease. This underscores the need for more precise and informed treatment strategies. Genomic testing is increasingly being integrated into cancer care to help clinicians better understand the genetic alterations driving an individual’s disease and identify treatment options that may be most effective. Integrated diagnostics creates a single ecosystem for cancer care from diagnosis to treatment selection, to post-treatment monitoring, improving enhance outcomes and quality of life for cancer patients.
This National Cancer Survivors Day, MedGenome has shared the story of this survivor in their latest documentary film to highlight the critical role of genomics in early and accurate diagnosis to guide more personalized treatment decisions and improve outcomes for cancer patients. Through this personal story, the film integrates insights from leading medical professionals like Dr. Bharat Bhosale, who highlights the significance of identifying genetic alterations to enable effective disease management.
Medical Oncologist and Founder of BB Precision Oncocare Centre, Dr. Bharat Bhosale, said, “In cancer care, every patient’s disease can behave differently. Understanding the molecular characteristics of a tumour provides an additional layer of information that can complement clinical assessment and help guide treatment decisions. As our understanding of cancer biology continues to evolve, genomic profiling is becoming an increasingly valuable tool in supporting a more personalized approach to patient care.”
Increased access to genomic testing is also helping make precision oncology more accessible across India, enabling clinicians to incorporate molecular insights into routine cancer care and support more informed treatment decisions for patients.
Speaking about the importance of informed and individualized cancer care, Dr. Prashanth Bagali, Head of Scientific Affairs – Oncology, MedGenome Labs Ltd, said, “Cancer care is becoming increasingly personalized, and genomics is playing an important role in enabling that shift by contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of cancer and supporting informed clinical decision-making. While awareness around precision oncology is growing, many patients and families are still unfamiliar with the role that genomic testing can play in understanding their disease. By sharing real survivor journeys and personal experiences like these, we aim to bridge that awareness gap that can help other patients and families better navigate their cancer journeys.”
The documentary is a part of MedGenome’s ongoing #AnswersThatMatter initiative, a long-term awareness campaign focused on improving public understanding of genomics, precision medicine and informed healthcare decisions through real patient experiences. The initiative recognizes cancer survivors, offers hope to those undergoing treatment, and raises awareness about advances in cancer management.
