Nov 27, 2012: In a move which could severely affect the automobile industry especially the diesel car market, Supreme Court has sought the response of Centre on imposing a green tax of 25% on diesel cars. Another suggestion for which the response has been sought is imposing a environment compensation charge of 2% annually on existing petrol cars and 4% on existing diesel cars. The Supreme Court has sought the response after hearing plea of a Senior Advocate and Amicus Curiae Mr. Harish Salve. This move of imposing levies is seen as a deterrent to growing pollution and to persuade the people to use more of public transport rather than using their own vehicles.
