National, 20th August 2026: The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), a global not-for-profit professional organisation that helps the global engineering community develop solutions to real-world challenges and advances engineering for the benefit of humanity, is bringing the second edition of its flagship International Mechanical Engineering Congress & Exposition (IMECE) India 2026, to Chennai. Under the theme “Engineering a Sustainable Future”, the three-day congress will serve as a platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration and innovation, bringing together stakeholders from across the engineering ecosystem to address the opportunities and challenges shaping the future of industry and technology.
The congress is expected to see representation from senior government representatives from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Chattisgarh and the Government of India, alongside global engineering leaders, industry experts and academic institutions. The ASME Board of Governors led by Dr. Janis Terpenn, PhD., ASME President (2026-2027) and Mr. Thomas Costabile, P.E., Fellow &Executive Director/CEO, ASME are expected to participate in the congress, underscoring the significance of IMECE India 2026 within ASME’s Global convenorship mission. The discussions will focus on the strategic priorities to contribute and help advancing India’s engineering future, spanning advanced manufacturing, MSME-led industrial growth, emerging technologies and innovation. By bringing together perspectives from government, industry, academia and the engineering community at large, IMECE India 2026 aims to foster collaboration, strengthen MSME capability and capacity and accelerate the adoption of future-ready engineering solutions.
IMECE India 2026 will bring together the engineering ecosystem across four key sectors: Energy, Mobility, Manufacturing and Digitalization. The programme will feature discussions on advanced energy systems, thermal technologies, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, manufacturing technologies, AI/ML, robotics and automation. The event is expected to feature 900+ technical papers and presentations, 600+ speakers, 3,000+ delegates and 75+ exhibitors, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, research collaboration and industry engagement across these critical sectors.
Speaking about the upcoming event, Madhukar Sharma, President, ASME India said “IMECE India 2026 comes at an important juncture as India’s engineering ecosystem plays an increasingly critical role in shaping the country’s industrial and technological future. The convergence of manufacturing, energy, mobility and digitalisation is creating new opportunities for innovation and collaboration. With IMECE India, we aim to bring together global expertise and Indian capabilities to foster meaningful dialogue, strengthen industry-academia collaboration and translate engineering advances into solutions with real-world impact.”
A key highlight of the congress will be the four dedicated MSME plenary sessions focused on strategic engineering and industrial priorities, including India’s nuclear manufacturing ecosystem and 100 GW ambition, the Deep Ocean exploration technologies to promote Blue Economy, aerospace, defence and hi-tech manufacturing, and the advancements in of digitalisation technologies and AI and in industrial applications and their impact potential for efficient and effective supply chains development. These discussions will shape how MSMEs will play a defining role in building future-ready supply chains.
Beyond industry discussions, IMECE India 2026 will showcase the role of engineering in solving real-world challenges and nurturing the next generation of innovators. Through initiatives such as Brain Bolt – The Engineer’s Sprint 2026, ASME Innovation Showcase (ISHOW) India, Innovation Square and the Mechanical Engineering Education Symposium (MEEd) India, the congress will promote innovation, entrepreneurship and dynamic engineering education. The programme will also feature a curated Women in Engineering panel discussion focused on leadership, mentorship and career advancement, reinforcing the importance of building a diverse, skilled and future-ready engineering workforce.
