Kolkata, 30th April, 2026: The School of Design at Bhawanipur Global Campus recently hosted a Master Session on character design and visual storytelling, in association with Amar Chitra Katha, India’s most iconic comic book publisher and the creative home of Tinkle magazine. The session was led by Savio Mascarenhas, Group Art Director at Amar Chitra Katha, and drew enthusiastic participation from both new and senior design students. It reflected BGC’s commitment to learning that connects students directly with working professionals at the top of their fields.
At the BGC session, Mascarenhas spoke at length about the development of Shikari Shambu and Little Shambu, tracing the decisions, adjustments, and creative instincts that have kept these characters fresh and recognisable across years of reader engagement. The session covered the fundamentals of character design, how line quality, posture, and expression carry personality before a single word is read, alongside the narrative logic that holds a comic strip together from panel to panel. For the students in the room, it was as much a lesson in creative discipline and long-term thinking as it was in technique.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sharmila Sinha, Principal, School Of Design, Bhawanipur Global Campus remarked, “Savio has spent over three decades shaping how generations of Indian children see and read the world. That kind of experience in a classroom is something no textbook can replicate, and it is exactly the kind of learning we want our design students to have access to.”
The Master Session is consistent with BGC’s approach to design education, which places practitioner-led learning alongside academic rigour, through professional certifications, industry collaborations, and sessions that bring working professionals directly into the classroom.
