India now runs among the highest volumes of IVF cycles in the world, and industry estimates put the number at roughly 200,000 to 300,000 cycles a year. Almost none of that cost is picked up by anyone but the couple. IVF is not part of India’s public hospital system in any general sense, and standard health insurance does not cover it either: IRDAI requires insurers to disclose their exclusions clearly but does not mandate fertility coverage, so IVF, IUI and ICSI remain standard exclusions unless a couple buys a specific rider, which is uncommon and comes capped. A single cycle at a private clinic commonly runs ₹1.5 to ₹3.5 lakh depending on the city, and most fertility specialists advise budgeting for two to three cycles before reassessing the approach. That can push a couple’s total spend past ₹5 lakh, financed in many cases on EMI, against reported per-cycle success rates that fall from roughly 35 to 45 percent under age 35 to well under 20 percent after 38.
The problem MetaQon is addressing is not a lack of testing. It is that standard pre-cycle panels can look normal while a genetic predisposition is quietly working against the couple, for example an inherited clotting disorder (a genetic tendency toward blood clots that can interfere with implantation), a methylation defect (a common genetic variant that affects how the body processes folate and B vitamins needed for healthy embryo development), or sperm DNA fragmentation (damage inside the sperm’s genetic material that a standard semen analysis does not pick up, since that test only looks at count and movement). It is also a financial one, often absorbed through savings or EMI, and an emotional one that a delay of even a single cycle can compound, particularly for women in their late thirties for whom ovarian reserve is declining month over month.
The cost of not screening for this earlier is the cost of finding out the hard way. A couple who proceeds on a normal semen analysis and a normal first-line hormone panel, while carrying an unflagged thrombophilia or methylation variant, is not protected by those normal results. They are simply not yet aware of what is working against them.
