A drone is being used in all kinds of ways to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus by denying the in contact of people. Cargo drones are highly familiar as these have been deployed by WeRobotics and Flying Labs since 2016. A well-known University in Dubai is planning for its 2020 batch to deliver their degree certificates using a drone. Students will arrive in their cars and they will take the slots allotted for them. When their name is called out, a drone will come and deliver the certificate to the car.

This approach is the first time in the UAE- perhaps in the whole world. The American University in the Emirates (AUE) is the one who is planning to conduct its graduation ceremony through drones. AUE at the Dubai Academic City on July 15 will see all the students arrive at the campus car park in their respective cars and will park their car at the slot assigned for them, which is two meters away from each other’s vehicle.

They will immediately be able to access an FM radio to follow the ceremony which will be chaired by Major General Dr Ahmed Nasser Al Razi, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and the University’s President Professor Muthanna Abdul Razzaq.

Muthanna is a virtual press conference that said that they have started thinking about how they can conduct the graduation ceremony during the coronavirus restrictions without breaking the safety regulations issued by the government. Graduation Day is a big day in a student’s life, a landmark day for any student and no student deserves to have this special day taken away. So they started to think about the various methods to do it and make their students feel happy and proud. This is how the idea of using drones came along.

Also, he said, “It is a simple idea during this pandemic time. It is creative, safe, and innovative. We believe that it’s the first-of-its-kind in the region and maybe also in the whole world.”

They have chosen July 15 for the graduation ceremony as it coincides with the birthday of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. His Highness has been at the forefront of promoting education and knowledge in the UAE and is a strong supporter of encouraging youth in the country, said Muthanna.
