Everything you need to know about the Pragati Maidan tunnel and its five underpasses in Delhi

1. The Pragati Maidan Integrated Transit Corridor project has been constructed with more than 920 crore investment. It has been supported in its entirety by the central government.

2. This infrastructure project would provide vehicles from the suburbs of Noida and Ghaziabad and east Delhi with e-signal-free access to India Gate, the Supreme Court, and Mathura Road, as well as the ability to travel in the other direction.

3. The tunnel begins next to the National Sports Complex of India (NSCI) on Purana Qila Road. It travels underneath the reconstructed Pragati Maidan before emerging close to the Pragati Power station on the Ring Road.

4. The Public Works Department (PWD) official stated that they had erected seven underground sumps to collect and drain stormwater to calm concerns about flooding automatically.

5. The excavation and building of the tunnel began in March 2018, and it was anticipated that the project would be finished in September 2019. Due to the numerous challenges presented by the construction work, the deadline has been pushed back to June of 2020. As a result of the COVID-19 lockdown, the original deadline of September 2020 was eventually moved to December 2020, and then it was further delayed to March 2022.

5. The Pragati Maidan’s tunnel will be subject to stringent surveillance thanks to installing almost one hundred closed-circuit television cameras to control the traffic.

6. The officials have stated that the tunnel and underpasses, to facilitate traffic flow in the ITO region, will also improve connectivity to the Pragati Maidan, which has just undergone revitalization efforts.

7. From the tunnel and the underpasses on Bhairon Marg, entry and departure points are designated explicitly for the Pragati Maidan.

8. The officials also mentioned that murals depicting Indian culture, birds, and the six seasons in various parts of the country ranging from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, will decorate the tunnel.
