Starbucks is testing reusable cups with an intent to cut down on its waste generation through disposable cups.

Customers will be able to use their reusable cups for every Starbucks visit in the United States and Canada by the end of next year, including café, drive-thru, and mobile order and pay.

In a video, the coffee behemoth showed how customers can get their fill using their cups every morning.

This approach is in line with the coffee chain’s strategy to assist it to meet its objective of decreasing waste by half by 2030.

On its website, Starbucks stated, that it is turning away from single-use plastics and launching reusable cup programs in six markets across the world. Their purpose, by 2025, is to create a cultural motion towards reusables by offering customers effortless access to a personal or Starbucks-provided reusable to-go cup for every stop, making it convenient and pleasant to reuse wherever buyers are appreciating their Starbucks Experience.

To assist in making reusables convenient for customers, Starbucks is testing numerous reusable programs and performing models:

• Borrow A Cup: Customers order drinks in a special Starbucks reusable cup, which is designed to be returned to stores, cleaned properly, and reused by other Starbucks customers. Starbucks has live pilots in Japan, Singapore, and London, and this was previously tested in Seattle last year. Each program is purposefully diverse (including the name!) to aid in the global search for the best feasible operating model.

• A 100 percent Reusable Operating Models: Single-use cups are completely abolished in this program in favor of reusables, personal cups, or for-here-ware. Starbucks started with four stores in Jeju, South Korea, and has since expanded to 12 more locations in Seoul. In the first three months of the trial in Jeju, an estimated 200,000 throwaway cups were diverted from landfills.

• Personal Cups & For-Here-Ware: Encourage guests to bring their cup and emphasize Starbucks’ for-here-ware as the default sit-and-stay experience. At its Shanghai Greener Store, Starbucks is experimenting with a 100 percent for-here-ware program.
