BAAZINGG KHWATAI Unveils a Haunting Descent into Folklore, Faith, and Fear

Baazingg Khwatai is a Hindi feature film that blends folklore, psychological tension, and ritualistic horror into a haunting cinematic experience set in the remote, brooding landscapes of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The story begins with a chilling discovery in a quiet town—severed human heads left without explanation. What initially appears to be a brutal crime soon unfolds into something far more disturbing, as Officer Tribhuvan, assigned to investigate the case, finds himself drawn into a trail that leads beyond conventional crime and into the realm of ancient belief systems.

The investigation reveals a secretive cult bound by generations-old obligation to appease the deity Baazingg Khwatai through ritualistic practices long buried in silence. As the truth surfaces, what emerges is not just a criminal case but a confrontation with inherited belief, fear, and forgotten folklore that refuses to remain in the past.

At its core, Baazingg Khwatai explores the stories we inherit and the gods we create, questioning when faith transforms from comfort into consequence. Rooted in fictional folklore yet shaped with cultural texture and lived sensibility, the film leaves the viewer with a lingering question—when does belief become a burden too heavy to carry?

The film is the result of a dedicated team of cinema professionals, largely associated with the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, led by FTII alumnus and Professor & Head of Screen Acting, Siddharth Shashta. Conceived as an effort to democratize filmmaking, the project brings together experienced artists and emerging talent, creating a collaborative space driven by a shared passion for cinema.

Speaking about the film, director Siddharth Shashta said, “The film explores how inherited beliefs shape human behaviour, often without us realising where they begin or why they continue.”

The cast features Siddharth Sharma, a veteran actor with over 26 years of experience across film, television, and theatre. He shared, “What attracted me to this film was its layered storytelling—it is not just about events, but about what they do to the human mind.”

Novkishor Dutta, who began his acting journey at the age of thirteen and trained at FTII Pune, makes his Bollywood feature debut with the film. Anshul Tyagi, who has worked with platforms and banners including T-Series, Netflix, Lionsgate Play, Zee TV, and Dibakar Banerjee Productions, plays Nakota. Alwin, known for his role in Sajni Shinde Ka Viral Video, appears as Mahendra.

Sharing his perspective, Anshul Tyagi said, “This film comes from a very honest place. A large part of the crew comes from FTII, and we approached it as a collaborative, learning-driven process. The story draws from the kind of folklore we grew up hearing across different parts of India. While it carries elements of fear and tension, it is not made to create unnecessary panic, but to offer a deeper perspective on belief, culture, and how these stories shape us. At its heart, it also reflects our understanding of feminine energy and the idea of the divine.”

Extensively shot in Assam, with portions filmed in Arunachal Pradesh, the film uses the region’s raw terrain as an integral part of its atmosphere and storytelling.

The film will premiere on 7 May 2026 at PVR City Centre, Guwahati, ahead of its nationwide release on 8 May 2026, with a strong regional rollout across 74 screens in Assam and select screenings in Arunachal Pradesh.
