Codian Robotics B.V., a leading supplier of delta robots, has been purchased by ABB and is used mainly for high-precision pick-and-location applications. The range of products offered by Codian Robotics includes a hygienic concept line, suitable for hygienic-sensitive sectors, including food and beverage and pharmaceuticals. With the deal, ABB is accelerating its presence in the growing field of delta robots.

Codian Robotics is based in Ede, Netherlands, and employs 20 people worldwide. The organization will continue to represent its clients directly. The acquisition was signed and approved on 1 October 2020 and both sides decided not to release the specifics of the purchase price.

“Our acquisition highlights our emphasis on cutting-edge technologies, helping our customers truly understand the value of automation and growing their versatility in a rapidly evolving market environment,” said Sami Atiya, President of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation.

While currently the majority of robots in the food and beverage industry are not designed to touch food, Codian Robotics’ portfolio includes a hygienic architecture that enables healthy, open food processing.

In the future, ABB will be able to supply its customers with a larger range of delta robots and automated applications from a single source, leading to ABB’s system-centric robotics approach, which combines machine automation and robot control into a common platform.
