The guise of eKYC update is one of the most recent ways that scammers are deceiving naïve individuals. While posing as a service provider, a fraudster will ask you for sensitive information such as Aadhaar numbers and bank account numbers, among other things.

We come across these things on a daily basis, and despite repeated warnings from banks, service providers, and the central bank, some people fall for them.

Customers were given a Whatsapp message this week asking them to upload eKYC and provide their contact number, or the number will be disconnected. When you contact that number, they will ask you to download the Team Viewer software, which allows the fraudster to take control of your phone.

Here are some recent examples of these eKYC frauds.

For example, in December 2021, Reliance Jio issued an e-KYC scam alert to its customers. Customers were warned by the telecom firm about the growth in cyber scams and frauds.

Your security is always a top priority for us at Jio. “In the recent past, a few cases of cyber fraud have been reported to us, in which imposters pose as Jio representatives and demand information related to your Aadhaar, bank accounts, OTP, and other personal information, primarily on the pretext of pending eKYC (Know Your Customer),” the Mukesh Ambani-led telco said in an email notification.

This form of fraud is known as ‘Vishing,’ according to the RBI website. Scammers posing as bank/non-bank e-wallet providers/telecom service providers call users and ask for personal information under the guise of KYC updates, unblocking accounts/SIM cards, crediting debited amounts, and so on.
