Tata Steel has always been known for its spirit of pioneering. Among the many ‘firsts’ that Tata Steel has come up with in human resources within the manufacturing sector are 8-hour workdays, maternity leave, gratuity upon retirement, 5-day workweek, etc.

With the motive to focus on Diversity and Inclusion, Tata Steel launched MOSAIC in the year 2015. MOSAIC is an initiative that the company took to build a people culture that celebrates and encourages diversity and inclusion in the workplace. MOSAIC focuses on the areas of gender, persons with disability, affirmative action, and LGBTQIA+.

To date, Tata Steel has onboarded 97 transgender people. Also, it has a 22-member all-women team at Noamundi Mill, already engaged in drilling, dumper, and shovel operations. Another move by Tata Steel in 2019 urged people belonging to LGBTQIA+ groups to enlist their partners with the company, to enable them to avail benefits.

Following those footsteps, Tata Pravesh – a brand of steel windows and doors – has endeavored to open up minds through thought-provoking films for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Independence Day, World Environment Day, World AIDS Day, and, most recently, Women’s Day. Tata Pravesh has also felt that the inclusion of the LGBTQIA+ groups into Tata Steel’s workforce merits being showcased to the world through a film.

Tata Pravesh’s new film Raahi – conceptualized by Wunderman Thompson Kolkata – is the story of an individual from the LGBTQIA+ group who is shunned by society but finds acceptance in the workplace. The movie sends a strong social message, encouraging everyone to open up their minds to be inclusive of individuals of various identities. It uses the hashtag KholoMannKeDwaar.

Tata Steel aims to create a 25% diverse workforce by 2025.

According to Jaya Singh Panda, Chief Diversity Officer at Tata Steel Ltd., the company’s objective has always been to drive diversity and build a benchmark workplace. The inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people in the Tata Steel workforce is a step in that direction, and the film Raahi urges people to accept everyone and create an inclusive workplace where equal opportunity is provided to all.
