Google buys Skybox for USD500 million, to send its own satellites in future

June 11, 2014: In yet another major acquisition by Google, the internet major on Tuesday announced that it is buying Skybox Imaging for USD500 million. This acquisition would help Google to send its own fleet of satellites and will help in improving the quality of satellite imagery used in digital maps. Though the acquisition of Skybox by Google is termed as a very ambitious project that could take several years to materialise, once operational it would allow Google to take aerial pictures and provide online access in the remotest areas of the world.

According to reports Google would be using the satellites which Skybox has already in the orbit to supplement the material that it gets from around 1,000 sources. This acquisition would help in expanding the effort of Google which it started a year ago when it unveiled “Project Loon”. In this project Google had sent out jellyfish shaped balloons equipped with antennas to bring Internet to parts which do not have access. The acquisition of Skybox by Google comes on close heels of another acquisition that the internet major of drone maker Titan Aerospace. Google has made around 250 acquisitions in the last one decade so as to expand its services.

Google interestingly has been involved in projects whereby they want more people in this world to access internet and whereby they access the services of Google.
