Otrivin & Wunderman Thompson create ‘non-toxic’ pencils for school kids

India’s leading nasal health brand, Otrivin, owned by global consumer health company Haleon, has launched a clean India initiative by introducing ‘Otrivin Pollution Capture Pencils’. The innovative project collects by-products of pollution and uses them to construct pencils ( certified non-toxic ) for underprivileged children of Bengaluru. The aim of this initiative is based on the fact that 98 percent of children breathe toxic air, according to a report by the World Health Organization (WHO) not only outdoors but also in their classrooms where children spend eight hours a day.

The project is developed in collaboration with Wunderman Thompson Singapore as part of WPP Team GSK/Haleon for the Otrivin actions to Breathe Cleaner programme. The project focuses on Bengaluru where people breathe more polluted air than WHO guidelines. The project started with three low-income schools in the industrial areas of Peenya, Hegganahalli, and Mallasandra with poor air quality.

According to the reports, 22 air purifiers with the ability to wipe out 74% of air pollutants were installed inside as well as outside the school buildings to improve air quality for 1500 students.

The specially designed purifiers use which use revolutionary soot cleaning technology developed by Indian innovation company Panjurli Labs and have been successful in cleaning over 2 billion cubic feet of toxic air in over two months.

As a result, the pollutants gathered from the process are mixed with graphite to make a core of 10,000 pencils which are certified non-toxic. Otrivin’s Pollution Capture Pencils were distributed to students and will act as a fundraiser for the installation of more air purifiers in local schools – thereby creating a self-sustaining ecosystem for change.
