Task Mining collects and analyses that data to give enterprises a fuller picture of how their business executes in the process as well as people wise. It allows businesses to capture user interaction data, so they can analyse how their people are getting work done and how to improvise them.

There are two major sources of data sets that are used in an organisation, Business data and Desktop data. Business data is that which lies in your transactional systems as time-stamped event logs that make up a business process based on what happened and when. Desktop data is everything that people do to make them happen.

The functioning of task mining at its basic level includes collecting the actions of the people who are making the business processes happen, automatically detecting the systems that users are interacting with. The process flow includes: 1) capture desktop data by Collecting clicks, scrolls and user, 2)Adding business context by using Optical Character Recognition technology to collect the words, numbers and additional text on a user’s screen and contextualize what they’re doing 3) Forming Cluster activities by Leveraging Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology and AI to automatically understand and sort each action by topic, and then cluster it into activities 4) Matching them to business data by identifying User IDs and Case IDs, Task Mining can correlate user interactions with the data from your operational systems and understand the impact of each action on your business outcomes and 5) Optimize outcomes by Leveraging Task Mining data to increase the execution capacity and ultimately the business performance.

The implementation of task mining helps Enterprises in managing quick data and accurately processing content such as documents, forms, images, and email communications. Resolving an enormous amount of manual work to find specific information in a document, perform data entry, and route the document for review and approval. And employees can be relieved from performing these error-prone tasks of processing content, and not without an impact on operations and customer experience.

Task mining having parallels with process mining, on another angle it uses user interaction data, rather than logs files and business metrics, to analyse processes. It also enables companies to understand how to manage tasks by collecting and analysing user interactions in-depth which will help enterprises automate and improve processes.
