Barbie Celebrates International Women’s Day With First-Ever Barbie Dream Team of Global Female Role Models

As part of the Barbie brand’s International Women’s Day initiative, Barbie celebrates the cricket trailblazer with a one-of-a-kind doll recognizing her influence on and off the field.

5th March 2026, India: Mattel, Inc. announced today that Barbie® is marking International Women’s Day with the launch of its first-ever Barbie™ Dream Team honoring women who led the way in their industries with one-of-a-kind dolls made in their likeness. Representing India on this global platform is cricket icon Smriti Mandhana, recognized for redefining women’s cricket and inspiring a new generation of girls to step onto the field with confidence.

Barbie Dream Team India Honoree: Smriti Mandhana

Smriti Mandhana becomes the first cricketer to be honored with a one-of-a-kind doll as part of the Barbie Dream Team. As the first Indian woman to score centuries across all three international formats i.e. Test, ODI, and T20, she has played a defining role in elevating the visibility and perception of women’s cricket in India. Her one-of-a-kind Barbie doll captures her sporting spirit and serves as a tribute to her impact on and off the field. The doll has been created exclusively to honor her journey and is not available for retail.

For generations, cricket in India has been a national passion, yet opportunities and visibility for women in the sport have historically been limited. Smriti’s recognition marks a significant cultural moment, reinforcing that sport is not defined by gender and that young girls can aspire to represent India at the highest level.

“This is incredibly special to me. Not just in India, but to be part of the Barbie Dream Team worldwide. All the women here are so inspiring, and I have grown up looking up to them. I felt very emotional because, while growing up, cricket was never the first choice for an Indian girl. I never imagined that one day there would be a one-of-a-kind Barbie made to look like me. Playing sport for India is one thing, but inspiring young girls is another- and there’s no better way to do that than through Barbie.” said Smriti Mandhana, Vice-Captain, Indian Women’s Cricket team.

Barbie has always championed the belief that girls can be anything. From astronauts to CEOs, Barbie has broken barriers and redefined what’s possible – igniting imagination and inspiring generations of girls to dream without limits,” said Nathan Baynard, Vice President and Head of Barbie, Mattel. “This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to build on that legacy with the launch of our Barbie Dream Team, celebrating an extraordinary group of global trailblazers who are paving the way for the next generation. By honoring their achievements, we hope to inspire girls everywhere to pursue their passions boldly and realize their limitless potential.”

Barbie Legacy of Possibility

Barbie knows that seeing is believing, and that access to accomplished female role models can expand what girls imagine for themselves. Since debuting in 1959, the brand has spotlighted more than 100 women across industries and communities who have driven meaningful change. Through these stories, Barbie continues to increase representation and broaden what’s possible for the next generation.

The Barbie Dream Team builds on this legacy by celebrating women who were among the first in their fields and continue to shape global conversations around excellence, resilience, and leadership.

This year’s global Barbie Dream Team honors women who were among the first in their fields, including:

  • Smriti Mandhana (India): The first Indian woman cricketer to score a century in all three formats (T20, Test and ODI).
  • Serena Williams (United States): Tennis Legend with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, entrepreneur, and global icon.
  • Kellie Gerardi (United States): Research astronaut and payload specialist.
  • Regina Sirvent Alvarado (Mexico): Professional race car driver and one of the most prominent figures in motorsport in Mexico.
  • Chloe Kelly (United Kingdom): Professional footballer and a defining face of modern women’s football.
  • Helene Fischer (Germany): One of Germany’s most famous and influential contemporary pop artists.
  • Zoja Skubis (Poland): Youngest Polish woman to summit Manaslu (8,163 m) and Mount Everest (8,849 m).
  • Stephanie Gilmore (Australia): Professional surfer and the first woman to achieve eight World Surf League (WSL) World Championship Titles.

Together, they represent sport, science, music, exploration, and entrepreneurship, demonstrating the diversity of paths available to young girls globally.

A Cultural Moment for India

Smriti Mandhana’s inclusion reflects the rapid growth and global recognition of women’s cricket in India. As stadiums fill, broadcast viewership rises, and young girls increasingly choose sport as a career aspiration, representation at this level reinforces a powerful message – Indian girls belong on the world stage. By honoring Smriti through a one-of-a-kind doll, Barbie underscores its continued commitment to celebrating Indian role models who inspire confidence, ambition, and belief.

The Barbie brand’s commitment to representation extends beyond one-of-a-kind tributes. The Barbie Career dolls available in India celebrate diverse professions and inspire children to imagine limitless possibilities. Through an evolving range that reflects different careers, interests and aspirations, Barbie continues to champion diversity and empower children to see themselves in every story they choose to tell.
