The launch of a comprehensive remotely piloted aircraft insurance coverage customized exclusively for drone operators has been announced by ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

ICICI Lombard said in a statement that this drone insurance package also provides a

Complete cover, allowing operators to choose between hull and liability coverage for any commercial use approved by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA).

This insurance covers the drone, as well as the payload (the camera or other equipment attached to it), against theft, loss, or damage, as well as Third-Party Liabilities.

Drones can currently only be used within Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) and during the day, according to DGCA regulations. However, given the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, drones could be used to monitor coronavirus-affected areas and conduct sanitization and monitoring efforts to ensure proper social distancing between communities. These conditions may also enable Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) activities.

Six types of risks are covered by the complete coverage.

  • The Hull Cover, which is included in the policy’s coverage, covers any unintentional loss or damage to the drone, as well as theft and disappearance. This excludes any loss resulting from normal wear and tear or increasing deterioration over time, as well as non-compliance with DGCA rules.
  • The Payload Cover and Equipment Cover insures the payload (camera/equipment) in the event of accidental physical loss or damage, while the same is attached to the drone and the property, which includes spares, engines, and other equipment.
  • Personal Accident Coverage for bodily injury incurred in India while operating drones as a consequence of an accident for the insured/authorized operator is also included in the policy.
  • The coverage also includes Medical Insurance Coverage for any insured/authorized operator who is hospitalized as a result of physical harm sustained while flying the covered drone.
  • The product’s Third Party Liability insurance covers losses resulting from accidental bodily injury and property damage caused by the drone. ICICI Lombard’s Third-Party Liability is a product that can cover losses caused as a result of the use of drones.
  • The benefits of the drone policy also includes nine add-on covers and a pay-per-use pricing approach, giving customers a complete experience tailored to their specific needs.

While the add-on coverage includes items like alternative hiring expenses, drone war liabilities, cyber liability cover, invasion of privacy cover, and BVLOS endorsement, the Pay Per Use model lets clients pick the policy that best fits their needs.

Customers have the option of purchasing a one-day, one-week, one-month, or even an annual coverage policy.

Commenting on the drone policy, Sanjay Datta, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company, said, “We at ICICI Lombard are committed to introducing innovative products that cater to the new-age risks. With our new comprehensive drone insurance coverage, we want to offer owners the best solution to ensure peace of mind.”

The policy can be purchased through the company’s online platform, which allows for quick quote generation and policy issuance.
