June 5th, 2025 There was a time when dating felt passive, more about being chosen than choosing. But today’s Indian singles are stepping into what many are calling their Main Character Era, a phase where they’re no longer playing supporting roles in their own love stories.
According to a new survey by happn, the real-life dating app, 66% of singles say they’re now choosing for themselves when it comes to romance, finally taking charge of their dating journeys and putting self-worth at the centre. This mindset spans across age groups, from young adults just entering the dating world to those over 35. Interestingly, Millennials reported the highest sense of control, with 68% saying they feel firmly in charge of their dating choices.
So, what’s behind this shift? The answer lies in growing self-awareness and emotional clarity. Nearly half of singles, 47%, say they feel most empowered when they connect with someone who truly sees and respects them. For 26%, that sense of confidence stems from knowing exactly what they want and refusing to settle. 40% say that this clarity has made their entire dating experience feel more effortless. Another 16% say their empowerment comes from enjoying their own company, free from the pressure of having to be in a relationship.
This transformation isn’t just about changing how people date, it’s about rethinking what dating means altogether. A quarter of respondents shared that they’re being more assertive than ever before, whether that’s initiating conversations, walking away when things don’t feel right, or setting clear boundaries. Others are reframing dating as something that brings joy and playfulness into their lives, rather than pressure or performance.
“The Main Character Spirit isn’t just a dating trend,it signals a deeper cultural shift. Across India, singles are moving from the margins to the centre of their romantic narratives. They’re rewriting the rules, prioritising themselves, and approaching relationships with clarity and confidence. At happn, we see this as a defining moment in how love is being pursued, expressed, and experienced today,” said Karima Ben Abdelmalek, CEO and President at happn.
This shift also reflects a growing demand for platforms that support more thoughtful and meaningful connections. With happn’s AI-powered “Daily” feature, which curates a select number of compatible profiles each day, users can engage more intentionally – no chasing, no endless scrolling, and no waiting around.
As the narrative evolves from “Will they choose me?” to “Do I even want this?”, it’s clear that singles today aren’t just navigating the dating world, they’re owning it. Because in their story, they’re no longer the side character. They’re the lead.
