Tata Motors is in the lead. Hyundai has surpassed Toyota as India’s second-largest automaker.

In December 2021, Tata Motors surpassed Hyundai to become India’s second-largest automaker. Last month, local automakers sold 35,300 cars in the United States, while Hyundai sold 32,312 cars in the same period.

Tata Motors’ SUV Nexon is the company’s best-selling vehicle in India.  Tata Motors’ December sales were the greatest ever. Tata Motors sold 99,002 vehicles in the third quarter of FY2022, the most in a decade.

In the calendar year 2021, the firm sold 3.31 lakh vehicles, the greatest yearly sales total in the company’s history. In December 2021, sales increased by 50% compared to December 2020, when 23,545 units were sold. Tata Motors saw a 44 percent increase in sales in the third quarter of FY22 when compared to the same period last year.

Tata’s electric vehicles have also received a positive reaction, with sales of the Nexon increasing and the Tigor EV being introduced last year. In December 2021, the company sold 2,215 units, an increase of 439 percent over the 418 units sold in December 2020. In Q3 FY22, the company sold 5,592 electric vehicles, up from 1,256 in Q3 FY21, a 345 percent increase.

“During the quarter, EV penetration reached 5.6 percent of PV sales, up from 1.8 percent in the previous financial year.” In 9MFY22, EV sales surpassed 10,000 units for the first time, and in December 2021, they surpassed 2,000 monthly sales for the first time. Domestic commercial vehicle sales increased by 4% to 31,008 units in December 2021, while exports increased by 5% to 3,143 units during the same period. In the third quarter of FY22, domestic sales increased by 10% to 90,529 units, while exports increased by 33% to 9,541 units.
