Four Principles of Explainable AI


The Principles of Explainable AI are a set of four rules that assist Explainable Artificial Intelligence in efficiently and successfully adopting some key qualities. These four principles were developed by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology to better understand how Artificial Intelligence models work. These ideas can be applied individually and independently of one another, and they can be evaluated separately.


This is the first important principle that requires an AI model to generate a full explanation with evidence and logic for humans to understand the process of making high-stakes business decisions. The other three criteria of Explainable AI provide the standards for these clear explanations.


The second concept of Explainable AI is that it gives human stakeholders and partners meaningful and understandable explanations. The more meaningful the explanation, the easier it is to comprehend AI models. The explanations should be simple and suited to the stakeholders, whether they are in a group or individually.

Explanation Accuracy:

The third principle requires that the intricate process of Artificial Intelligence for producing meaningful outputs be precisely explained and reflected. It aids in ensuring that a system’s explanations to stakeholders are accurate. For different groups or individuals, there may be different explanations or accuracy measures. As a result, it’s critical to provide multiple types of explanations with 100 percent accuracy.

Knowledge Limits:

The fourth and final principle of Explainable AI argues that the AI model only works under particular parameters as specified in its design with specific sets of training data— the black box’s knowledge is restricted. To avoid any discrepancy or inappropriate outcomes for any firm, it should act within its knowledge constraints. To preserve trust between an organization and its stakeholders, the AI system must define and declare its knowledge limits.

Explainable AI aids in improving AI interpretability, assessing and mitigating AI risks, and deploying AI with the highest level of trust and confidence. With self-explaining algorithms, Artificial Intelligence is growing more advanced by the day. Employees and stakeholders must have a comprehensive grasp of the AI model responsibility in machine learning algorithms, deep learning algorithms, and neural networks for self-explaining algorithms to make informed decisions.
