CCI order “strikes a blow” on the country's efforts to speed up digital acceleration.

Google’s request for an interim stay on ruling by the competition commission of India (CCI). Recently declining in the wake of the national company law appellate tribunal penalties amounting to Rs. 1,337.76 crores on google for unfair market practices and these penalties slapped by the antitrust watchdog. The giant tech released a blog post recently saying the CCI order “strikes a blow” on the country’s efforts to speed up digital acceleration.

For exciting digital transformation google has collaborated deeply with India in the last few years. However, the direction in the order of CCI strikes a blow at the ecosystem-wide efforts to enhance digital adoption in the country. At that time only half of the Indian population is connected with these digital transformations. Before Indian courts, google is appealing these directions. While there has been debate on the subject and a lot of reporting, it is critical for the company’s stakeholders and users to understand the full import of what lies at stake.

The blog released by the company answered, how android is the key element of the Indian mobile and internet growth story. This blog says a country like India has had profound implications where the adoption cost of digitization is the biggest barrier. Many users have incentivized many developers and each of these developers achieved immediate growth by writing a single app for android.

In 2022 the number of annual app downloaders in India is at a new high of 29 billion. This makes India the second largest app market after china (source App Annie). It offers a strong platform to establish a viable business on play to developers in India and elsewhere. The post further points out a major issue,” the ordered remedies on Android” harms the predictable and consistent ecosystem that has benefitted developers and users for over 15 years.

Gadgets and devices built on incompatible ‘Forks’ will prevent google from securing these gadgets and devices. As these devices and gadgets versions would not support the user safety and security features that gadgets and devices users to expose malware, bugs, and cybercrime-for the millions of users who are especially vulnerable this is a major and critical problem for them. Predatory apps expose users to data theft and financial fraud on the internet both from other countries and India.
